WHEN EVENING FALLSStory:I was sitting in an outdoor mexican restaurant in austin texas with my friend ebet, when she got a call from her girlfriend. the news was sad, disturbing, and hard to believe. her friend's daughter, a girl named Rachel Corrie, had been killed. Rachel had gone to palestine to become a human shield. to protect the house of a palestinian family and the only well in the area. when she kneeled on the ground to keep the army away, a young soldier drove over her with his bulldozer. he said he didn't see her. Rachel's friends said she was trying to get up and get out of the way when the bulldozer pulled her under. she was a quiet girl, very sensitive and warm, and very brave. the next day the new york times ran a small article. 2 or 3 sentences, about an american girl getting killed in gaza. that was all. no one tried to find out what exactly happened, no one asked out loud why this had to happen and will most likely happen again.this song is dedicated to rachel, her mother, her friends, to everyone who works for peace to come.Lyrics:WHEN EVENING FALLSWhen evening falls by the oceanWhen the sky and the earth have a tangerine glowThere's a silver road on the waterThat's where I wanna goWe all travel along to the gate of dawnWe all get called to the sky The gentle hand of love makes us weak makes us strongWe whisper we shout we sigh So why can't we be brothers Why can't we live in peace Why do we hate each otherWhy do we bring war and griefWhen we could all live in paradiseIf we'd open up our eyesIf we'd look around and realizeThat peace could come todayWe're all looking for hope with the eyes of a childWe gather our loved ones aroundWe could learn to forgive to let go of our pride We're lost and we'll all be foundSo why can't we be brothers ...OJE MAMA OJEstory:i traveled in kenya a few years ago. the samburo people, a masai tribe took my friends and me on a week long walk in a dried riverbed. i recorded the songs they were singing while we walked and i recorded the tribe dancing and singing when we stopped to rest. from what i could make out these songs were stories and the storyteller would start by chanting "oje mama oje". you can hear them on the loops and samples throughout the song.i heard the story of mamadou in west africa. Mamadou is a farmer and he is really poor. so poor that he decides to go and find a sorcerer that is supposed to live far inside the jungle. People say that this sorcerer can make diamonds and gold from nothing, appear and disappear like the wind, talk to the animals in the jungle, he can make you a rich man, if you can find him, if you can give him a live chicken or a sheep, if he is in a good mood that is and decides you deserve it.Mamadou grabs his last chicken and gets on his way.when he finds the sorcerer's hut, he pleads his case. he is in love with a beautiful girl but he can't marry her, because he is poor. the sorcerer takes pity on him and decides to help him. he tells him to build a fire and goes back into his hut. The sorcerer comes back with a can of gasoline, pores it over the wood and sets it on fire. when the flames are nice and hot he takes the chicken and throws it in. the chicken burns up and mamadou is beside himself. "what did you do this for! he cries. we could have eaten it or waited for it to lay eggs. now it's ruined!""well, says the sorcerer, i'm going to make some money for you now, a lot of it, and while i do, i want you to think about this, because, when i give you the money you could end up just like that chicken in the fire.lyrics:OJE MAMA OJEChorus:Oje mama oje, oje mamaOje mama oje, oje mama ojeI went to see the sorcererThey told me that he couldMake money in the forestFrom blood and spells and woodFrom blood and spells and woodOje mama ojeI found him by the marketplaceIn a dimly lit CafeHe's the son of a king of a tigress of a snakeHe's as old as time, they sayHe's as old as time, they sayBridge:He saidSo you need money, you wanna be rich, I seeYou Leni Stern When Evening Falls Songs When Evening Falls Review

When Evening Falls
$16.45 āA composer with the ability to transcend several musical genres and yet stay firmly focused within his own perceived sound. The word 'genius' I have always reserved for the greats like Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Richard Thompson and Louie Armstrong, but given the diversity, variation, number of musical genres, and the prolific number of high quality, original compositions of all styles of music Pete has put out. and continues to produce every year, not to mention a back catalogue of finely crafted original songs (that always have something unique to say about the human condition), it's hard not to use the word for him here as well. If he is not a genius then he is certainly one of Australia's most creative and interesting composers for acoustic music to emerge in the last decadeā Tony Bates ..Musicologist/Reviewer' Station Librarian /Presenter 3WBC 94.1FM, BOX Pete Hawkes is one of the most important figures in contemporary roots music due to his melding of different styles, his capacity to write anything from delta blues to stunningly complex orchestral music and due to his radically different conceptual approach to recording. Now considered by many of his contempories as one of the great composers of his time, not only due to his capacity to write evocative and stunningly beautiful emotional music, but more so due to his unusual ability, unlike most writers, to write innovative, often ground breaking music in all musical genres, Hawkes still remains an unknown quantity to many. Never really lusting for fame and fortune and remaining a composer rather than entertainer, Hawkes actively sought to negate the opportunities for stardom ...
