Generally regarded as Elton John's masterpiece, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD is a double-album (on one CD) that includes several of his signature songs alongside a sprawling array of lesser-known (but by no means lesser) tunes. The hits included "Bennie And The Jets," a funky, falsetto stomper; the Rolling Stonesy rocker "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting"; and the gorgeous title ballad. "Candle In The Wind," an elegy for Marilyn Monroe, which didn't become a certified hit until 14 years later, when John re-recorded it with the Melbourne Symphony. The fact that it wasn't released as a single at the time is testimony to the wealth of pop pleasures available here.
The swelling, synth-fueled overture of "Funeral For A Friend" gives way to one of John's toughest guitar-rockers in an 11-minute medley. "Grey Seal" is a piano showcase with a perfect verse-chorus-verse construction. The rocking "All The Girls Love Alice" is one of the era's most overt references to lesbianism, and "Harmony," the soft ballad that closes the album, may be John's grandest melody. Willfully eclectic and packed with great music, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD bursts with the bold energy and undeniable talent that made John a superstar.
This is a 2-disc set; disc 1, an audio DVD includes the complete album, with bonus tracks in advanced resolution sound, advanced resolution stereo, dolby-digital surround sound; disc 2 a DVD includes a full-length "making of" the album with interviews by John, Taupin and others, along with archival footage of the original recording sessions.

I have 5 versions of this album (original, remastered, MFSL Gold, SACD and now the DVD-A version) all of them different and all of them wonderful to listen to but it is the DVD-A version that most impresses. Put this on your DVD-A player and its like hearing an old friend with a new voice - the surround sound mix is fresh, vibrant and completely different to the stereo version. Well worth considering if you are a fan - a must have if you are a collector.

Have several copies of this, MFSL gold CD,CD,SACD LP etc, and prefer the DVDA as it has more bass and a better soundfield.

"Goddbye, Yellow Brick Road" is Elton John's best. If you are an Elton John Fan and have the CD of this one and you have a DVD player with Surround Sound, this is a must. Accompanied with a second disc that is very interesting, made at the time when Elton and Bernie were at their best, Words & Music.

Elton's benchmark and breakthrough album couldn't sound better in ARSS. Greg Penny not only mixed and mastered the Brick album with expertise in this high resolution format, but, additional albums using DSD technology. The surround sound format is exceptional; the sound field has depth and balance. The unassuming track like "Dirty Little Girl" has never sounded better. Elton's remastered albums in high resolution are second to none! Looking forward to further work by Greg Penny in the future!
