A comic reinvention of the Bela Lugosi classic about a Transylvanian vampire who works his evil spell on a perplexed group of Londoners. Director: Mel Brooks; Actors: Amy Yasbeck, Anne Bancroft, Clive Revill, Harvey Korman, Leslie Nielsen, Lysette Anthony, Megan Cavanagh, Mel Brooks, Peter Mac Nicol, Steven Weber. Mel Brooks--who has already parodied Westerns, sci-fi films, Hitchcock thrillers, and swashbucklers--now concocts a hilarious spoof of Dracula and monster movies. Leslie Nielsen stars as the infamous vampire.
Mel Brooks aims his pun-gun at the Dracula legend--and, particularly, at Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 film BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA--in this undead spoof. In DRACULA: DEAD AND LOVING IT, Leslie Nielsen brings the deadpan humor of the NAKED GUN series to the role of the infamous vampire. Between its many sight gags and puns, the movie sticks fairly closely to the classic story line of previous screen versions, beginning with Renfield's (Peter MacNicol) visit to Count Dracula's creepy Transylvanian castle on legal business. The solicitor becomes Dracula's insect-munching slave and the two journey to London, where the count racks up more victims, most notably the busty Lucy Westenra (Lysette Anthony). When Dracula's archenemy, Dr. Van Helsing (Mel Brooks), attempts to end the vampire's reign of terror, oodles of mayhem and gallons of fake blood are let loose on Victorian London. As one would expect from Brooks and Nielsen, this particular Dracula--who is prone to falling down staircases and crashing into windows when he takes on bat form--becomes the butt of numerous jokes. The cinematic jokes are even better--many of them derived directly from Coppola's lush and innovative film techniques and the bad British accents that abound in his DRACULA film. Horror will never seem the same again. Theatrical release: December 22, 1995.
The film grossed $10.6 million domestically.
Peter MacNicol, who plays Renfield, was a teen star in the 1970s, and the brother of actor Kristy MacNicol.
Screenwriter Rudy DeLuca has a cameo appearance in the film as a guard.
Mel Brooks's wife, Academy Award-winning actress Anne Bancroft, has a cameo as the crazy Gypsy woman in Transylvania.

Dracula: Dead And Loving It review
$9.39 In 1984, writer Sam Shepard and director Wim Wenders teamed up for the indie hit PARIS, TEXAS, a story about family and identity, set in the American West, that won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. More than twenty years later, they're back together again for DON'T COME KNOCKING, a highly entertaining journey that examines the similar topics, with equally inspiring results. Shepard stars as Howard Spence, a former Hollywood cowboy legend whose career has fallen apart in a blur of women, drugs, and alcohol. He disappears from the set of his latest film in Moab, Utah (directed by the great George Kennedy), bent on figuring out just who he really is, so he heads home to Elko, Nevada, to see his lonely mother (Eva Marie Saint) for the first time in thirty years. Unbeknownst to him, he is being trailed by Sutter (Tim Roth), a bondsman determined to find him and bring him back to finish the $32 million movie he started. The grizzled Spence finds out that he might have a child from a fling on an old film set, so he takes off for Butte, Montana, where his past quickly catches up to him in the form of a small-town waitress (Shepard's real-life wife, Jessica Lange). As he tries to establish ...
