The Name of the Rose is a gothic medieval mystery thriller set in a 14th-century Italian monastery. Franciscan monk William of Baskerville (Sean Connery) and a young novice (Christian Slater) arrive for a conference to find that several monks have been murdered in mysterious circumstances. To solve the crimes, William must rise up against the Church authority and fight the shadowy conspiracy of monastery monks using only his wit and intelligence. Based on Umberto Eco's best-selling novel, "The Name of the Rose" is a medieval whodunit set in a 14th-century Italian monastery. Franciscan monk William of Baskerville and a young novice arrive for a conference to find that several monks have been brutally murdered. In his attempt to solve the crimes, William must challenge the authority of the Catholic Church by eschewing religious fervor in favor of rational thought.

Additional credits: Rainer Schaper (art director), Pierre Hebey (associate producer).

Name Of The Rose Movie Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews brilliant movie on a brilliant novel Much more than just a Gothic'whodunit' it is a multi-layered,multi faceted human story of the progress made by the humanity since the 'Genesis', which ofcourse is very little. it is also a story about the politics of religion and religion of politics. see how the love and knowledge and human refinements become the first casualties of this game of power at the hands of stupid arrogant and power-hungry myopic leaders(religious and political both) across the world.
great story, great acting and great direction! one of the finest movies ever made. Submitted by sahaysanjay (Gaya, Bihar, India.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Mysterious I saw this movie some years ago and was impressed then with the storyline, I like a good mystery, with twists and unusual situations.
The title has to do with the girl, we never really learn her name.
I still like the movie, the storyline shows how corrupt and narrow minded people with extreme beliefs can be. Submitted by stevepsokolow (Harwinton) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Amazing screen adaptation of Umberto Eco's masterpiece 7.99 for this film?! Truly a sign of the times. Do not let this ridiculously low price fool you; this film by director Jean Jacques Annaud is nothing short of a masterpiece. The cast, the script, even the soundtrack is amazing.
There are so many astounding acting performances...words cannot describe...

I loved everything about this film The musical score, the setting, the story, the photography, the makeup, etc.... it was awesome.
This is a murder mystery set inside a monastary full of religious fanatics, hypocrites, and liars. The film is rich in lustful situations, secrecy, intelligence and even "in-breeding". You will be thoroughly entertained. I would also catagorize this as a platonic love story and a romantic one also. Sean Connery is a true gentleman.
