| | Nina Simone Silk & Soul CD Nina Simone Discography of CDs
On 1967's SILK & SOUL Nina Simone brings her blues- and jazz-steeped background to a set of more straightforward soul tunes. As usual, though, there is little straightforward about Simone's versatile delivery, which ranges from smooth, understated groovers (a nightclub-styled version of "The Look of Love") to bluesy, jazzy swing ("Go to Hell") to horn-driven R&B ("Why Must Your Love Well Be So Dry"). While the album may not be the best place for the Simone novice to begin, it includes plenty of excellent performances.
Digitally remastered edition of the original LP issue that comes in a special LP sleeve replica. Returning to soul that had brought her to fame during the early part of the 60s, "Silk & Soul" was as commercial as Simone got for RCA. The album spawned many popular classics including her rendition of Bacharach/David's "The Look Of Love" and one of her best known songs "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free".
Remastered reissue.Entertainment Weekly (pp.p.68-69) - "SILK & SOUL captures Simone's many moods as well as any album does....With that earthy, masculine voice that sounded like dusk descending." -- Grade: A Silk & Soul Review

Silk & Soul album
$12.79 HERE COMES THE SUN is a 1970 pop-oriented release by jazz pianist and singer Nina Simone.
Just past the point where a great artist reaches too far for new material, 1971's Here Comes the Sun presented Nina Simone in a contemporary setting with eight covers of recent rock hits. Though the title track isn't very embarrassing -- her voice betrays a few technical faults -- there are few successes with the rest of the material. Simone's versions of "O-o-h Child," "Mr. Bojangles," "Just Like a Woman," and "My Way" are historical curiosities and sound terribly dated (the furious bongos and sweeping strings on the last is a dénouement). Much of the problem lies with the arrangements, though several times these passable rock songs get the best from Simone's interpretive skills. ~ John Bush
BMG International compiled this collection of Nina Simone recordings from the late '60s and early '70s, the bulk of which comes from her LPs ...

$12.05 NINA SIMONE SINGS THE BLUES, a 1966 release from the legendary husky-voiced jazzy soul singer, finds the vocalist digging deep into the music of the Delta with versions of classics like "Do I Move You," "I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl," and "House Of The Rising Sun."
Originally released in 1967, SINGS THE BLUES marks the beginning of Nina Simone's tenure on the RCA label. True to its title, the album is steeped in the blues, with Simone's passionate vocals and nuanced piano lines evoking a beautifully bittersweet world of sultry love and inevitable heartache. Backed on many tracks by an ensemble that's intuitive enough to play it loose, Simone settles into a deep groove on songs such as the stirring "Do I Move You?" and the slowburning "In the Dark," while getting lightly funky on "Day and Night." The record's showstopper, however, is a haunting solo rendition of "My Man's Gone Now," one of the most powerful versions of the Gershwin classic ever recorded. A fascinating snapshot of the legendary performer, SINGS THE BLUES is an essential Simone album.
Nina Simone Sings the Blues, issued in 1967, was her RCA label debut, and was a brave departure from the material she had been recording for Phillips. Indeed, her final album for that label, High Priestess of Soul, featured the singer, pianist, and songwriter fronting a virtual orchestra. Here, Simone is backed by a pair of guitarists (Eric Gale and Rudy Stevenson), bassist (Bob Bushnell), drummer (Bernard "Pretty" Purdie), organist (Ernie Hayes), and harmonica player ...
| | Night At The Family Dog DVD (1970)
Silk & Soul songs
$11.79 In the late 1960s, the Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco, California, was a countercultural mecca whose ragtag assemblage of hippies, artists, writers, musicians, and other like-minded bohemians nurtured a stellar music scene that produced some of the greatest rock bands of all time. Filmed at San Francisco's legendary Family Dog Ballroom in September 1970, A NIGHT AT THE FAMILY DOG is an amazing document of the entire Haight-Ashbury scene distilled into one incredible night of performances from three of the era's most definitive bands: Santana, the Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane. Produced by poet and jazz critic Ralph J. Gleason as part of a documentary series for the National Educational Television Network, the concert film boasts two songs by Santana, three by the Grateful Dead (one of the only known ...

$10.29 Woody Allen mixes the tragic with the comic in MELINDA AND MELINDA, a delightful, intelligent look at two versions of the same story. After hearing a tale about a quirky woman who walks in unexpectedly on a dinner party in an apartment in New York City, Sy (Wallace Shawn) expands it into a romantic comedy, while Max (Larry Pine) turns it into an urban tragedy. Allen intercuts between the two retellings, intermingling cause and effect, love and romance, failure and success, as Melinda creates havoc in both fictional worlds. Each story has its own cast: the comedy features Will Ferrell, Amanda Peet, and Josh Brolin; the tragedy stars Chloe Sevigny, Jonny Lee Miller, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Radha Mitchell is the only repeat actor, playing both Melindas, and she does a tremendous job. Interestingly, the comic section is not a straight laughfest, like Allen's SLEEPERS, ANNIE HALL, or BULLETS OVER BROADWAY, and the more serious part is not nearly as dour as INTERIORS or ANOTHER WOMAN. ...
| | Luciana Souza Poems Of Elizabeth Bishop And Other Songs CD (2000)
Silk & Soul music CDs
$13.75 Luciana Souza moves to the Sunnyside label for her second album, an ambitious project focusing on the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979). In all, four of Bishop's poems receive original musical treatments. But in a rather bold move, Souza includes two of her own song-poems, "Daze" and "Do Tell," which stand up quite well in comparison. Six more originals with wordless vocals complete the program. Souza's partners in this endeavor -- pianist Bruce Barth, saxophonist Chris Cheek, bassist John Lockwood, and drummer Marlon Browden -- do a superb job with her delicate but often quite difficult material. Barth and Souza go it alone on two of the Bishop poems, "Argument" and "Imber Nocturnus." "Sonnet," which opens the disc and returns as a reprise, has a surprising, almost Carole King-like pop-folk vibe. The remarkable "Insomnia" finds Souza involved in a bit of semi-vocalese, capturing the night imagery in the swooping, rapid play of syllables. Admirers of this record will be interested ...
