| | TRR50: Thank You CD
It took Temporary Residence a little longer to get it out than fans would have liked -- as the catalog numbers and releases kept flowing the magic number 50 sat in limbo for over a year, but TRR50: Thank You finally arrived and upon listening, it was worth the wait. The 11 tracks gathered here are all exclusive, making the collection more than a mere label sampler and more a fan letter to fans (thus the "Thank You" of the title), including a 24-page booklet featuring art solicited by TR from their admiring public. The mood of the collection is set with Fridge and their nine-minute daydream "Five Combs." The expansiveness displayed by Fridge is representative of many of the artists here -- Explosions in the Sky, Tarantel, Kammerflimmer Kollektief, Sybarite, Sonna -- all moving outward in different directions from the same contemplative center that in many ways defines the Temporary Residence sound. Rumah Sakit and Parlour provide some louder, pulse-quickening moments that give the collection a much-needed balance. ~ Wade Kergan

TRR50: Thank You album
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version ...

| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
TRR50: Thank You CD music
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should take it slow" over swooping strings, brass, and piano that resurrect the glory days of AM pop; that feeling is echoed by the cover of Joe Raposo's "Sing," the Sesame Street song that gained popularity when the Carpenters performed it (Emilio Delgado, aka Sesame ...
| | Michael Gira What We Did CD (2001)
TRR50: Thank You music CDs
$11.85 This set by Swans and Angels of Light frontman Michael Gira and Windsor for the Derby frontman Dan Matz is a small wonder of sophisticated songsmithing and an exercise in complete collaboration -- something that (on this level at least) wasn't happening either in the pop or indie rock worlds at the time of this album's release. There is a relaxed, airy feeling in these songs, and a remarkable consistency of purpose and production in that they were recorded over two years at irregular intervals. There is the blissed-out drift and swoon in "Pacing the Locks," with Matz on lead vocals barely articulating his words above the guitars and Gira's layered backing chorus. And on "Is/Was," there is a long, sleepy/slippery guitar intro before a snare and a tambourine enter in the distance. Basses begin to interweave the folk-blues guitar line, as it drones into vocal. If Bob Dylan is making blues records from a school that never existed properly as blues, then these cats are making a mutated kind of modal blues that comes from the memory of a music never even heard.
Other standouts on the disc include the Mattel drum-machine hypnosis of "17 Hours," with its twin guitar ostinato and droning keyboard lines punctuating a chanted vocal by Gira. With more power it might have been a Swans tune, but there is a deviation in the rhythm that sounds like a steel drum filling in the phrases, though ...
