Providing a fresh outlook on alternative pop rock, Austrian trio Valina knows no stylistic boundaries. The band's fourth studio release, VAGABOND, was originally released in Europe in 2002, but Valina's singular vision remains quixotically relevant. Valina fits into no genre-specific mold, but could perhaps be described as either New Wave-jazz fusion or avant rock, with their hands dipping into several styles in each composition.

| | Paul McCartney Good Evening New York City CDs (2009) With DVD; Digipak
Vagabond
$15.98 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining

| | John Fogerty Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition
Vagabond
$14.29 John Fogerty released his first solo CD, an album of covers on which he played all the instruments, under the name the "Blue Ridge Rangers," and he revives that concept on 2009's THE BLUE RIDGE RANGERS RIDES AGAIN. Where the first smacked of the righteous zeal of a young purist, RIDES AGAIN is a lot looser in its attack, which is reflected in the way it splits the difference between country and rockabilly classics and reflective numbers from '70s songwriters. These unexpected covers of John Prine, Delaney & Bonnie, and John Denver offer a peek at a sweeter, gentler Fogerty, a Fogerty who can also be heard on how he lays back instead of pushing ahead on Buck Owens' "I Don't Care (Just as Long as You Love Me)" and Ray Price's ...
| | NG La Banda En La Calle CD (1992)
Vagabond
$12.89 All songs written by Jose Luis Cortes except "La Expressiva" (Fidel Morales), "Necesito Una Amiga" (D.R.), "Un Tipo Como Yo" (Sergio Esquivel), "Lo Que Siento Es Le Lo Ley" (Dagoberto Gonzalez).
NG la Banda was an all-star group of sorts, drawing members from the most important of pre-timba bands. Players and vocalists came from such influential artists as Pachito Alonso, Orquesta Revé, Irakere, and los Van Van, yet not taking too many members from any one place to be considered an off-shoot group. Similarly, their blend of rumba, son, rock, jazz, songo, and funk was an even enough split to be called something entirely new. The material on NG la Banda's QBAdisc release En la Calle comes from their early period, from about 1988 to 1992, a time known as "the birth of timba." Having recorded four vinyl records that were never released on CD, this is the only source for the group's formative material. Including radio hits like "La Expresiva" and "Los Sitios Eterno," En la Calle features ten strong tracks that would forge the way for Cuba's new musical voice. Having produced members who would go on to lead their own trailblazing groups, like Giraldo Piloto and Issac Delgado, the early years for NG la Banda were a period of incredible creativity and ...
| | Waxwing Nobody Can Take What Everybody Owns CD (2002)
Vagabond
$9.49 On their third album, Waxwing get back to the emo-punk sound that inspired them to form a band in the first place. Nobody Can Take What Everybody Owns is passionate, earnest, and more aggressive and the band has never sounded better. Singer/songwriter Rocky Votolato is vocally reminiscent of Jimmy Eat World's Jim Adkins. A boyish charm surrounds him, but Votolato aches in concern. Nobody Can Take What Everybody Owns shows Waxwing's self-awareness of society's own paranoia and estrangement against the mental war of trust versus dejection. Life's minimizer is at the heart of "The Worst Kind of Liars." Guitars are somber and Votolato's vocals quiver in a beautiful kind of pain. The jagged edges of "Colour" dance around communication breakdowns while "Records" vigorously rips apart commercial conformity. Waxwing doesn't exactly do anything new when it comes to establishing ...

Vagabond
$12.59 In the late 1980s, Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians caught the nation's fancy with their neo-hippie folk-rock. Since parting with the band, Brickell's solo outings have been few and far between--one in the mid-'90s (produced by husband Paul Simon) ...
