Grupo Cimarron de Cuba/Various Artists: Luis Eduardo Moreno, Ana Veydo Ordonez, Wilton Games (vocals); Hugo Antonio Molino Martinez, Yesid Benites (guitar); Libardo Rey (cuatro); Carlos Rojas Hernandez (harp); Ricardo Albino Zapata Barrios (bass instrument); Omar Edgar Ramirez (maracas).
Grupo Cimarron De Cuba has certainly recorded their share of Cuban music. However, on this outing, the ensemble concentrates on the traditional plains music of Eastern Columbia. Together with a talented group of guest artists, Grupo Cimarron brings to life this exciting and little-known genre.
Many indigenous instruments are used here to exact Joropo, a regional style of music that is popular in Columbia and Venezuela. For example, bandola and cuatro guitars are featured on most of these tracks, as are maracas, claves, and a full harp (without pedals). Propelled by passionate singing, this mostly upbeat and up-tempo music is clearly meant for celebration and dance. On most of these tracks, sharp, percussive accents and staccato guitar picking is offset by smooth, legato vocals. The best example of this may be "Marķa Laya," a lively work in 6/8 time that centers on the grandeur and lyrical beauty of Ana Veydo Ordonez's voice. Other pieces such as "Los Diamantes" and "Los Merecures" spotlight Carlos Rojas Hernandez's virtuosic harp playing.

This is actually billed as a leaderless date, possibly instigated by this quartet's alto player, Sadao Watanabe, as it's a concert from 1978 in his native Japan. It's an exuberant, well-recorded set with all hands in good form. Speaking of the saxophonist, it is, fortunately, Watanabe the bebopper, not his fuzak-peddling alter ego. Bristling with a physical, Phil Woods-like virtuosity, he holds nothing back. He may not be subtle, but he's burning. Drummer Tony Williams also plays with a flashy power that works well in ...

Si Soy Llanero: Joropo Music From The Orinoco Plains Of Colombia
$11.65 THE COMPLETE QUARTET RECORDINGS pair up Bill Evans and Eddie Costs with Miles Davis, Paul Motian, and more.
This Lone Hill Jazz compilation is a bit misleading. Though Bill Evans and Eddie Costa are present on every track, this CD actually consists of the complete contents of his album Guys and Dolls Like Vibes plus one track from Michel Legrand's Legrand Jazz. The Frank Loesser songs chosen from his Broadway musical Guys and Dolls (a fairly recent hit at the time of these 1958 sessions) are fertile ground for Costa (who sticks to vibes, though he was also a good pianist) and Evans. Their logical improvisations on these catchy melodies, several of which became popular vehicles for jazz musicians and singers, feature both men equally, backed by the superb team of bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Paul Motian. One can feel the chemistry in the swinging take of "Guys and Dolls," the moving ballad "Adelaide" (an overlooked ...
