Remember that outta control weedly-weedly solo in the middle of Let's Degenerate's title track? Well, that's exactly what you won't find on We Know How It Goes, Red Planet's first work in three years. Recorded at their leisure in keyboardist/vocalist Chris Dunn's home studio, the album largely loses the racket that used to fray Red Planet's ends (not to mention their live shows), concentrating instead on a tightly crafted set of poppy/rocky gems squirted up with keyboard squiggles, Beach Boys harmonies, and sensibilities matching those of types like Shoes, the Knack, or even Redd Kross. Should the Planet start spelling its Red with another "d"? Well, no. But there's no question that opener "No Force"'s spacy leads and slightly fazed vocals are more about fun and white-leather wingtips than ratty leather motorcycle jackets and getting your teeth knocked out by a mike stand. "Goth Girl" is a funny track about dating the titular archetype set to a sweet Cheap Trick groove, "Changing Colors" is an awesome marriage of sun-dappled vocal harmony and trashy tailgate-party guitar (dig that production, Dunn!), and "H.O.P.E." drops in the Rentals' WEE-oo WEE-oo keys that you've been waiting for since track one. "You better wait in the alley/While we're loading the gear/Show us a good time...Give us some beer." Dig! Elsewhere, the Planet slows things down ("Wrecking Balls and Cannonballs"), jacks into spiky pre-New Wave new wave ("Burning Cigarettes"), and even sells a track called "Good Time." We Know How It Goes is effortlessly happy, and referentially hooky like the solo work of Todd Fancey and A.C. Newman. For some reason it brings to mind Peter Godwin. Cool Speak & Spell cover art, too. ~ Johnny Loftus

| | Fleshtones Do You Swing CD (2003)
We Know How It Goes CD music
$13.69 Some folks like to say that history is cyclical, and it certainly supports this theory that just as a bunch of young bucks have (once again) come along to say that rock & roll is getting stale and needs a good dose of high attitude and fuzz-tone energy, the Fleshtones -- who've been saying the same thing since 1977 -- have re-emerged to remind the world how this whole "super rock" thing is supposed to be done. Maybe they don't dress quite as sharp as the Hives, or pose as well as the Strokes, or get worshiped by the British press quite like the White Stripes, but one spin of the Fleshtones' 2003 platter Do You Swing? proves that if you wanna get a rock & roll dance party started, Peter Zaremba and company are still your finest one-stop shopping place. And perhaps having some fresh competition (not to mention facing the fear of being outclassed by bands fronted by guys who weren't even alive ...
| | Oblivians Rock N' Roll Holiday: Live In Atlanta CD (2003)
We Know How It Goes music CDs
$9.25 Through most of their existence, "subtle" was a word rarely used to describe the gloriously messed-up attack of Memphis roots punks the Oblivians, but they never sounded quite so frantic and hot-wired than they did on this live album, recorded during a feedback-laden 1994 show that found the band opening for like-minded maniacs the Woggles and the Mono Men. Briefly available in a pressing of 300 LPs in 1996 and now reissued on CD, Rock 'n Roll Holiday is one 45-minute, slightly hissy blast of cheap guitars pummeled into submission; drums beaten senseless; and hoarse bleatings about sex, violence, and various forms of anti-social ...
| | Fountains Of Wayne Welcome Interstate Managers CD (2003)
We Know How It Goes songs
$11.39 Fountains Of Wayne was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. "Stacy's Mom" was nominated for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
Following a four-year hiatus that found Fountains of Wayne going from Atlantic Records to S-Curve Records, New Jersey's favorite power-pop outfit delivers WELCOME INTERSTATE MANAGERS, the band's third opus. FOW does an excellent job of capturing the suburban zeitgeist that dates back to the band's name (derived from a Garden State backyard fixtures emporium) and carrying ...
| | Union Carbide Productions Remastered To Be Recycled CD (2005) (Import) Import
We Know How It Goes album
$17.99 In the late '80s, Union Carbide Productions were an essential live rock & roll experience whose on-stage theatrics made anything happening in front of the stage seem pretty tame by comparison. The underground was a very self-conscious place, where nostalgia for anything prior to the Ramones revolution wasn't as celebrated as it was when Nirvana covered the Shocking Blue's "Love Buzz." There were exceptions, of course; the Cramps were self-exiled freaks whose outrageousness (and age) gave them license to pillage the '50s freely, but not many folks were really tapped into the '60s punk shamanism vibe of the Stooges with as clean a feed as these Swedes. The early UCP recordings bear this connection out best on "Ring My Bell" and the hilarious corporate hedonism ...
| | Hurt Process Heartbeat Behind CD (2005)
We Know How It Goes CD music

| | Restless Doll CD (1998)
We Know How It Goes music CDs
$17.89 This is a hot CD consisting of 30 songs by female rock & rollers, only one of whom -- Jackie DeShannon -- is going to leap out in terms of name recognition. Strangely enough, this disc is more consistent musically than a lot of Buffalo Bop's other releases. They held back on this until the label had 30 consistently solid songs to put together, and the result is a good-time, fast-paced rock & roll collection by the fairer -- but not a bit less lusty -- ...
