Tiger Army: Nick 13 (vocals, guitar); Geoff Kresge (vocals, bass instrument); Fred Hell (drums). Additional personnel: Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar). Just as they did with 2001's II: Power of Moonlite, Tiger Army begin III: Ghost Tigers Rise with a brief, mood-setting prelude. The move establishes spiritual leader Nick 13's music in a world outside our own, in a silvery place somewhere between celluloid and the supernatural. Some operators in the genre get caught up in their own stylism -- all that talk about ghouls and gore over slap bass and recast punk chording atrophies into one enormous (and enormously dull) song. But Tiger Army are different. First of all, Nick 13 can sing. He pours bitterness and yearning into the melody of "Santa Clara Twilight" -- it ends up sounding like Del Shannon fronting a rockabilly version of Social Distortion. "Through the Darkness" and "Rose of the Devil's Garden," too, expand psychobilly's traditional aesthetic borders with vocal harmonies and interesting changes -- in short, Tiger Army write songs, not generic genre product. "Ghost Tigers," the distorted-vocal rave-up "Swift Silent Deadly," "Atomic," and especially "What Happened?" land on the band's harder side. While the slap rhythm and decadent, corpse paint lyrics ("I want to show you what happens when we die") are present and accounted for, there's Ramones in the guitar work and even the vocals. Overall, it's another solid outing from Tiger Army, who find real inspiration -- not just rehashing of theme -- among the leather jackets, nether world references, and biting heartbreak that have always defined psychobilly. ~ Johnny Loftus In the strange world of psychobilly, existing somewhere between punk and rockabilly, Tiger Army led the charge in the early years of the 21st century. GHOST TIGERS RISE finds the trio delivering more melodic and sophisticated fare than the boilerplate punk aggression of many of their contemporaries. Song imagery tends towards the dark side, but given that drummer Fred Hell survived getting shot multiple times in 2003 (and had his seat filled by Mike Fasano on this outing), it's no wonder. Guitar-playing frontman/producer Nick 13 guides Tiger Army through an array of intriguing songs, ranging from the twang-fest "The Long Road," featuring guest pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz, to the foreboding rockabilly of "Santa Clara Twilight" with its mentions of pirate bones and eternity. Nick 13's warm croon also makes his crew stand out from their So-Cal peers, particularly on the reverb-soaked thump of "Ghostfire" and the surprisingly swinging 1980s pop sound of "Rose of the Devil's Garden." Although I was at first leery of the changes apparent in the newest Tiger Army release, after a few listenings it quickly became a new favorite.
This album exudes dark romance, which in this case is a wonderful thing. Nick's vocals tend to be smoother throughout, and rarely attain the screaming intensity of previous releases such as F.T.W. Again, though I originally was not quite certain the changes were advantageous I ultimately rank this as their best album yet. Submitted by SpookyGunslinger (UT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Not great, but good I want to start off by saying that I’ve been anticipating this one since summer 2001, when Tiger Army released the excellent II: Power of Moonlight. With that said, I just want you guys to at least check the Army out.
Tiger Army is classified as a psychobilly band, which is described as being a cross between rockabilly (think early Elvis) and “punk” rock (think Rancid). Their first two releases were hard, fast and loud reminiscent of early AFI mixed with a stand-up bass and rockabilly overture. With Ghost Tigers Rise, Tiger Army sways away from the hard rocking sound found previously on their prior albums.
At first, this may be a huge let down for fans of those two records. But as all progress, and especially since Tiger Army is after all, a psychobilly band, a more rockabilly sounding album was expected. What wasn’t expected however was Nick 13’s weakening lyrics. On the past two albums, the lyrics were definitely more poetic and polished. Ghost Tigers Rise doesn’t have the same excellent prose Tiger Army fans have been accustomed to. Another let down is that the album contains two instrumental tracks. You can’t help but feel cheated out of a song. The drum work is weak but forgivable since Tiger Army hasn’t had a permanent percussionist for two consecutive releases.
Minor gripes aside, the album as a whole, is very good. You’ll notice on the second track that Geoff Kresge has mastered how to play the stand-up bass. The slaps finally sound like a true rockabilly bass should sound. What makes Ghost Tigers shine is their newer sound which may or may not take getting used to. As stated previously, some songs, lyrically, are forgettable, but most are still up to par for Nick 13. Most inspiring are Wander Alone, Santa Carla Twilight, Rose of the Devil’s Garden, and Through the Darkness.
Ghost Tigers Rise is a worthy successor to the bands previous efforts. It may take getting used to. For those who know Tiger Army, be informed. Ghost Tigers Rise is less AFI and more Johnny Cash.

NEVER DIE! Their best release! A little different from the previous 2, but give it a few listens and you will find out for yourself. Submitted by Scott (Calgary, AB) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
As If This Isn't Good If you've heard from your friends that Ghost Tigers Rise is a slower-paced and far less intense album than TA's previous efforts, then they'd be right. But that doesn't at all stop it from being a great follow-up to Power Of Moonlite. The content here is amazing: Nick 13's vocals are smoother than ever and Geoff Kresge's stand-up bass work is blrilliant! Off the top of my head there definetely isn not a bad song on the album, stand out tracks include Wander Alone, Ghostfire, Rose Of The Devil's Garden, Atomic, oh f'uck it their all pretty much stand out tracks. Tiger Army III: Ghost Tigers Rise
$20.95 Dave Matthews Band's The Gorge captures highlights from the band's legendary 2002 three-night stand at one of the most magnificent venues in the country. The Gorge features over 3 hours of music and video - recorded in stereo and 5.1 audio and shot with over 20 cameras in Hi Def video. Extra DVD features include the documentary short "A Look Inside The Gorge", "The Making Of The Grace Is Gone Video," The Grace Is Gone video, and multi-angle coverage of Ants Marching & What You Say.
Dave Matthews Band: Dave Matthews (vocals, guitar); Boyd Tinsley (vocals, violin); LeRoi Moore (vocals, horns); Carter Beauford (vocals, drums); Stefan Lessard (bass guitar). Additional personnel: Butch Taylor (keyboards). Even though it consists of two CDs and a DVD, the latest live album by Dave Matthews is actually a teaser in a sense. Not that that's a bad thing. The Gorge, recorded over three nights in 2002, is easily Matthews' finest officially released live outing, even if you can get the entire run in a six-disc set for a very reasonable price through the band's website. This baby just whets the appetite. But does it ever. Matthews and company lay out 14 tracks, many of them less obvious choices than on previous outings. The music here comes from Before These Crowded Streets (a beautiful opening medley of "Pantala Naga Pampa" and "Rapunzel"; "Ants Marching" doesn't appear on the CDs at all, just the DVD footage!), "The Song Jane Likes" from Remember Two Things, and tracks from Busted Stuff, Crash, Everyday, and even Some Devil. The jams are tighter and rowdier; ...
