Maze started when singer/guitarist Frankie Beverly, who had kicked around in a number of Philly soul groups, was inspired to found the self-contained R&B band Raw Soul. After moving to San Francisco, the ensemble eventually metamorphosed into Maze. The band's 1978 debut album is split evenly between hard-grooving, percussion-laden funk and more melodic, vocal-oriented R&B. While "Lady of Magic" and "Look at California" are indicative of the soft, ballad-oriented style that would eventually make Maze famous, the heavy-hitting tunes "Time Is on My Side" and "Color Blind" help to make this the grittiest, funkiest album in the Maze catalogue. All the seeds of Maze's subsequent successes can be heard here in an embryonic state, but this is the work of a band in flux, still moving towards its signature sound.

Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly CD music
$8.09 Frankie Beverly and Maze's fourth album, JOY & PAIN, was their most fully realized recording to date, with Beverly really coming into his own as a producer. While the more extensive production of third album INSPIRATION served mainly to enhance the ballads, here there's a richer, more fleshed-out feel to every element of the Maze sound. The opening cut, "Changing Times," is full of visceral jazz-meets-funk textures ...

Released in 1983, WE ARE ONE continues in the vein of Maze's smooth, positive R&B. The vehicle of singer, songwriter, and producer Frankie Beverly, Maze epitomized the seductive urban pop of the early '80s, even as Beverly's silky croon recalled the style of Marvin Gaye. Though not quite as commercially successful as the group's previous releases, this outing still spawned four charting ...

| | Harold Mabern Few Miles From Memphis CD (1968)
Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly CD music
$14.15 On A Few Miles from Memphis, recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968, he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.
When record labels like Prestige release two albums on one CD, it's a great bargain for music fans. A Few Miles from Memphis combines the album of the same name and Rakin' and Scrapin', both recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968. On the first set he's joined by tenors ...

Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly music CDs
$10.69 It was the early days for soul reissues when this compilation first came out as a Kent LP in 1982 -- so it's understandable that the annotation was on the perfunctory side (though odd that, when it was reissued on CD, no additional information was added to the liner notes, let alone extra tracks added to the disc). Even so, as various-artists soul anthologies ...
