Though Donavon Frankenreiter shares the same mellow surfer vibes as his labelmate/producer/surfing buddy Jack Johnson, the multi-syllabically named singer foregoes woozy jam-band tropes in favor of a sound reminiscent of dreamy, late-1960s soul in the Marvin Gaye/Stevie Wonder/Chi-Lites vein. Frankenreiter is possessed of a truly resonant, old-school R&B voice that is reinforced by the album's wonderfully warm, spare production. The result sounds more down-South than South Pacific. The spirited, retro-without-sounding-dated instrumental performances come courtesy of several members of Ben Harper's band, with guest appearances from Johnson and similarly groovy blues-rapper G. Love. A breezy, inviting mix of older sounds and new attitude, DONOVAN FRANKENREITER mixes Memphis, Chicago, and Detroit soul influences with a California beach-bonfire vibe.
Donavon Frankenreiter is a surfing buddy of Jack Johnson's. He also makes music that, not surprisingly, isn't too dissimilar to Johnson's. Add to that the fact that Johnson produces and plays a variety of instruments and sings on Frankenreiter's debut CD, Donavan Frankenreiter, and you have a record that is tailor-made for fans of Jack Johnson. Also for fans of laid-back, good-time music, that has much in common with jam bands like Phish (without the instrumental prowess and willingness to show it off) and also soft rock sounds of the '70s. Every song is built around acoustic guitar, quiet drums, and mellow percussion, and Frankenreiter never raises the tempo much past ramble, although on "Day Dreamer" he does dial it all the way up to lope. Frankenreiter has a good-natured, stoned-sounding drawl of a voice that delivers his light and breezy lyrics perfectly and with slacker soul. The pure sweetness of the album may turn off some listeners as might the similarity of the songs, but those who are into it will be very into it. Perfect for campfires late at night on the beach, early Sunday morning-afters, and lazy days in the cubicle, Frankenreiter has crafted a fine debut full of friendliness and low-key charm. Donavon Frankenreiter album
$12.29 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking soul. The material on this set is tight; there is less jamming but Gordie Johnson's production and mixing equalize everything at ten, making it feel like the disc is recorded live.
The set opens with the pulsing bass throb of "Broke Down on the Brazos," just before Haynes and guest guitarist Billy Gibbons ...
| | Creed Full Circle CD (2009) Digipak
Donavon Frankenreiter CD music
$13.59 Getting right back to where they started from, Creed reunites for Full Circle, putting all tensions to rest and cutting their first album in eight years. FULL CIRCLE is a none-too-subtle allusion to how they're getting back to their beginnings, but a cynic could say they never got much past it, toiling the same weathered ground on each of their albums, but this bears some subtle differences, particularly in how Creed sounds heavier yet more open ...

Donavon Frankenreiter songs
$16.19 A slight cautionary note here: although all of the artists on this compilation had affiliations with the Beatles' Apple company in the late '60s, just one (the Iveys, who later became Badfinger) actually recorded for Apple Records. The others -- Focal Point, Grapefruit, Paintbox, Ways and Means, and John Fitch -- released songs administered by Apple's publishing company, without actually releasing material on the Apple label. That clarification noted, this is a decent anthology of obscure late-'60s British rock (ten of the 18 tracks previously unreleased) that's pretty far toward the "pop" side of "pop-psychedelia," as well as bearing a tangential connection to one of the most interesting pop enterprises of the time, Apple. By far the most famous of the performers were the Iveys, and Badfinger fans will be excited by the appearance of five previously unissued Iveys demos here, only one of which ("Maybe Tomorrow") would be re-recorded for official release. Though these aren't as hook-ridden as the best of Badfinger, the promise is there, with a couple of songs boasting a late-'60s mod rock Who-ish sound that wouldn't be typical of Badfinger's eventual style. Serious Beatles fans will probably also be familiar with Grapefruit, the band built around songwriter George Alexander (older brother of the Easybeats' George Young). This CD has their minor British hit single "Dear Delilah," the B-side "Ain't It Good," and alternate non-orchestrated versions of two songs from their first LP ("Lullaby" and "Another Game"); perhaps unsurprisingly, they sound like a combination of the Easybeats and the Beatles' more fey-sounding pop-psych excursions. Also in the Easybeats mold are a couple George Alexander songs given to other artists, Paintbox's "Getting Ready for Love" (on which Easybeats George Young ...
