Sweden's metal scene consistently breathes new life into a style that had long since hit a wall in many other territories. Among the most provocative and original of these acts is In Flames. The brainchild of vocalist Anders Friden and guitarist Jesper Stromblad, In Flames began in 1990, crafting a unique direction and, over time, solidifying a lineup of formidable instrumentalists, including longtime member Bjorn Gelotte (who moved from drums to guitar since joining the group).
On SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR ESCAPE, In Flames relentlessly pushes stylistic barriers, incorporating goth, classic thrash, and death-metal elements, resulting in a distinctive blend. The heavy ballad "Evil in a Closet" begins with moody, clean vocals in the verses and unexpectedly blasts into a chorus of brutal death growls. Boasting sinister riffs in the Testament/Slayer vein, "Touch of Red" gives way to an instantly memorable chorus, while "The Quiet Place" stands as the most melodic and accessible track, with potential to expose the band to the masses.
Additional Tracks

$8.49 Whether or not it is his intention, Justin Broadrick's Jesu project continues to move into ever more song-oriented material, while never lessening the volume or the sheer melodic thud of his attack. Opiate Sun is released on Mark Kozelek's Cabo Verde imprint. Initially, it was conceived as the first of a projected two-part EP idea: Broadrick originally wanted each EP to feature a collaboration between his live ...

| | Edie Carey When I Was Made CD (2003)
Soundtrack To Your Escape songs
$13.19 If this album had been released in the late '90s, Edie Carey would have found herself as a part of the Lilith Fair circuit. Her sensitive singer/songwriter style fits right in alongside such female folk-pop performers as Paula Cole, Dar Williams, and Shawn Colvin. However, Carey isn't just another English major turning her diary into songs. She displays a true skill at exploring the ways relationships affect the heart and mind. Her whispery voice is particularly good at conveying emotional vulnerability. "Anyone can see my heart is reeling," she sings on the opening number "With Our Hands," which sets up the disc's examination of how people deal with heartache. "Wide Open" takes on an obsessive mood as the protagonist wonders "if I drive by your house tonight, what would I find?" The melancholy-dipped "Already Gone" counsels that "love should not drag you down or beg you to stay." Carey tackles the weighty issue of her parents' divorce on "If I Start to Cry" so poignantly that her pain is palpable. Not every tune, however, is an emotionally heavy number. The radio-friendly "I Need You" is an exuberant declaration of love. It definitely is one of the disc's standout songs. Besides displaying lyrical wit and musical vibrancy, it is also one of few up-tempo tunes here. Carey does try to compensate for the predominance of sad, introspective songs by infusing the arrangements with a bit of twang. A banjo enlivens "With Our Hands" and "Chemistry," while a pedal steel reinforces the sense of loneliness in "Already Gone." While Carey travels down the familiar singer/songwriter path of dissecting broken hearts and busted relationships, she finds some fresh, and moving ways to express her feelings in song. When I Was Made stands up impressively with the albums that the Lilith Fair crowd has produced. ~ Michael Berick
WHAT THE PRESS IS SAYING ABOUT "WHEN I WAS MADE"... PERFORMING SONGWRITER MAGAZINE, March/April 2004"Her voice [is] a full, expressive instrument with the gentility of Suzanne Vega and the soft punch of Rickie Lee Jones...On Carey's fourth album 'When I Was Made' she adds...a warm, rootsy mix, reminiscent of country-tinged chanteuses like Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams (if not as rough as the latter). The result is a lovely, shimmering, heart-felt record, highlighted by springy ballads like 'Open Wide' and 'Chemistry,' both of which, in tone and content, deal poignantly with the imperfections of romance."PASTE MAGAZINE, February 2004"Edie Carey is gifted with one of those voices that could sound great singing anything. So the mystery and beauty on her [third] ...
| | Death Angel Art Of Dying CD (2004)
Soundtrack To Your Escape album
$13.85 Leave it to Bay Area thrash metal pioneers Death Angel to name their recording rebirth, 14 years in the making, The Art of Dying. Oh, the irony! Never ones to play it straight, Death Angel, like their first wave of thrash inspiration, Exodus, shocked their aging fans when they courageously shrugged off the years of rust and returned to active metal duty in 2004. And because they were merely teenagers during their first run, most of the band are amazingly still in their early 30s! More importantly, they've done so in style. The Art of Dying, even while bypassing the often Byzantine arrangements heard on the group's first two albums, manages to maintain the songwriting focus of their third (and heretofore last) effort, Act III, while arguably providing a better all-around thrash experience than the latter. The race is a close one, but there's no denying that everything about The Art of Dying's frenetic, scratchy-riffed first track (requisite acoustic guitar intro notwithstanding) "Thrown to the Wolves," as well as the brilliantly concussive highlight "Thicker Than Blood," positively screams "old-school" thrash. In fact, except for a few very discreet trad-metal tricks, and the odd hardcore vocal or two snuck into "Five Steps to Freedom," "The Devil Incarnate," and "Prophecy," so does everything else on display here. The reasons are clear for all to see: as in their previous life, Death Angel's sound continues to ...

$11.55 Funny how progressive metal pioneers Neurosis existed in a virtual creative vacuum for almost a decade before the similarly inventive Isis tapped into their musical teachings, expanded upon them, and, in turn, magically opened the floodgates for hundreds of other bands to materialize from the ether and begin weaving monumental trance epics of their own design. Naturally, as has always been the case with new trends in popular (and even not-so-popular) music, the hordes of faceless bandwagon-jumpers greatly outweighed the promising successors, which included Arkansas dirt-encrusted sound technicians Rwake, Chicago instrumental ...
