Following the release of BLACKENED AIR and RUN TO RUIN, the steadily growing cult success of contemporary singer-songwriter Nina Nastasia led Touch and Go Records to reissue her first album, DOGS. Originally released on a tiny label in 1999, DOGS contains, in embryonic form, all the elements of Nastasia's better known later albums.
Over the course of 15 brief songs (only the tortured "Nobody Knew Her" breaks four minutes), Nastasia spins a litany of oddly titled but affecting lyrics about romance and darkness. Steve Albini's bare-bones production keeps the focus entirely on Nastasia's wounded but unflagging vocals, with the more ornate backing of her later albums largely absent.
Nina Nastasia's first outing is a captivating, melancholic affair of precision and emotional clamor and stands as a fantastic sibling to her essential sophomore album, The Blackened Air. Dogs has a calming atmosphere, occasionally flirting with dissonance, and stands as a remarkable work of minimal building by repetition to support Nastasia's pitch-perfect voice. It is a rare group who can pull off such a fluid shift from composed sophistication to raw, dangerous, and sinister energy and not only continue to be engaging, but make ascending demands so confidently as to require full attention for the span of 40 minutes without interruption. Hypnotic, luscious, and timeless, Dogs is an album whose freshness and immediacy will never falter. ~ Gregory McIntosh

Dogs album
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," ...
| | Nina Nastasia Blackened Air CD (2002)
Dogs CD music
$12.19 Like many a fine singer/songwriter, Nina Nastasia spent years lurking underground in New York City before her talents came to wider attention. THE BLACKENED AIR is her second album, but the first to receive wide distribution. It presents a fully formed artist with as strong a sense of setting as of songwriting. Though the album is basically an acoustic affair, a string section and accordion (not ...

| | Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (2005)
Dogs songs
$12.05 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," a jangly, upbeat tune featuring My Morning Jacket's Jim James on backing vocals. Throughout the record, Oberst reaches nearly hysterical peaks, seemingly overcome with emotion as his wavering voice, which often recalls Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano, veers almost, but not quite, out of control. Oberst's eccentric vocal delivery makes his pairings here with ever-graceful ...
| | Antony I Am A Bird Now CD (2005)
Dogs album
$12.49 Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy Scott (another Reed supporter) and Aaron Neville. The stately, graceful, largely piano-driven songs on I AM A BIRD NOW are full of honest, uncluttered emotion, but never go over the top. The communication is direct and immediate, ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Dogs CD music
$8.49 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful ...
