Six Organs of Admittance is one Ben Chasny, guitar-picking icon of the underground folk resurgence that began in the late '90s. In a manner similar to the finger-blurring East-meets-West style of John Fahey, Chasny gets to truly strip down on FOR OCTAVIO PAZ. Featuring all acoustic songs, without Six Organs' usual psychedelic flourishes, this album was originally released vinyl-only in an edition of 500. After the opener, "Fire on Rain," and its tinkling, droning, and chiming bells, the album delves into delicate melodies that nurture the reverberations of Chasny's nylon guitar strings. The album continues with similarly mesmerizing pieces until the final track, "The Acceptance of Absolute Negation." Here Chasny switches from nylon to steel strings and milks the amazingly agile Eastern-style tones for all they're worth: the song clocks in at almost 30 minutes.

| | Six Organs Of Admittance Compathia CD (2003)
For Octavio Paz songs
$11.59 With Compathia, Ben Chasny takes Six Organs of Admittance further in the direction of "songs" in the traditional sense (as opposed to extended, largely instrumental, raga-like jams). Assuredly, these aren't pop songs, but they are, most definitely, songs. With Dark Noontide, Six Organs' previous effort, Chasny's folky eastern melodies were balanced by his chant-like moan. But with Compathia, he sings on every track save one, the brief title track (which functions as a beautiful instrumental breather mid-album). His voice is also noticeably pushed forward in the mix, and the songs themselves are less cluttered by percussion and other instruments, ...

For Octavio Paz songs
$13.45 In 1997, the Document historical reissue label brought out a CD packed with rare recordings dating from 1939 through 1947 featuring boogie-woogie piano master Meade "Lux" Lewis. Its 31 tracks contain material harvested from Blue Note, V-Disc, Asch, Disc, and Black & White studio recording sessions; from Camel Caravan, Command Performance, and Jubilee radio broadcasts; from Panoram cinematic juke box "soundies" and commercially released motion picture soundtracks, as well as live sessions both public and private. Tracks one through four have introductory announcements by Benny Goodman and Johnny Mercer, and Goodman's big band chimes in on Mary Lou Williams' "Roll 'Em." Other announcers include gangster flick mainstay George Raft (track six) and Ernie "Bubbles" Whitman (tracks 9 and 17). Vocalists are Big Joe Turner (tracks 13 and 15) and Helen Humes (track 24). Lots of variety and not a few surprises make this an exciting core sample from the Mighty Meade's eventful career. Those who appreciate historic cinema and/or have a taste for the bizarre will want to swoop down ...
