(12 Customer Reviews)
Detroit vocalist Fred Hammond has danced skillfully on that gloriously blurred line between gospel and sweet soul music for decades, whether solo or with his group Commissioned. Hammond's knack for letting the spirit resound in his vocals has earned him a well-deserved following. The energetic SOMETHIN' 'BOUT LOVE adds to his catalogue of energetic records with a slate of inspired, groove-laden odes to salvation.
Hammond is also a skillful songwriter, co-penning most of the album's tunes, including the deft, intricate single "Celebrate (He Lives)." Brian McKnight and Marvin L. Winans join him for a lustrous trio on the undeniably catchy "Lord We Need Your Love." Hammond's closest musical cousin in the secular world is Stevie Wonder, a connection accentuated when he ably covers Wonder's "Love's in Need." Hammond's records craftily interweave R&B and inspirational music, and SOMETHIN' 'BOUT LOVE continues that tradition.

Somethin' 'Bout Love songs
$8.99 Donald Lawrence opens I SPEAK LIFE, his first record without the Tri-City Singers, with "Healed," a song where he delivers, in the most welcoming and relaxed tone, a universal sermon of finding recovery in a return to salvation. In the middle of the song, Lawrence unguardedly remarks "I like this part." It's that sense of openness that permeates the album, embodying the joy that makes Lawrence's gospel so markedly appealing.
This particular sense of joy has attracted, in addition to a legion of fans, many leading lights from both the inspirational and secular musical worlds to collaborate with Lawrence here. Like-minded preacher Hezekiah Walker joins Lawrence on a self-proclaimed "simple song," the funk-infused "You ...

| | Lee Konitz Portology CD (2007)
Somethin' 'Bout Love music CDs
$13.39 The great alto saxophone master Lee Konitz joins Portugal's Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos directed by Ohad Talmor for this studio session of progressive big band music that is consistently surprising and original. Konitz is given quite a bit of solo space, surrounded by an expansive-sounding band that is clearly influenced by the precepts of Oliver Nelson, Gil Evans, and their European counterparts and disciples. There are four stand-alone compositions and two large suites, all written and arranged by Talmor save Konitz's famous hard bop piece "Sound Lee." The three-part medley tribute to Ornette Coleman, "Ornetty," is rhythmically spastic, up and down dynamically, and skittish melodically, and it has a somber middle section in remembrance of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. The five-section "Rhythm Sweet" is split into short snippets in a mainstream jazz style, ranging from straight to easy swinging, with "To Be or Not To" sounding similar to the standard "Mean to Me." A darker, stealth guitar-fed motif, film noir section punctuated by the ...
