The Briefs: Steve E. Nix (vocals, guitar); Lance Romance (bass guitar); Chris Brief, Daniel J. Travanti. Personnel: Daniel J. Travanti (vocals, guitar, electric guitar); Chris Brief (vocals, drums); Lance Romance (vocals). Recording information: EGG Studio, Seattle, WA (03/2004). Photographer: Joey Veneziani. The Briefs are intent on re-creating the shout-along choruses of earlier British punk bands like the Damned and the Sex Pistols, but with far more hooks in the vein of a tamer Dropkick Murphys. The quartet is very tight, having perfected the two-minute three-chord gems that sound like a band on the cusp of something grand. "Halfsize Girl" is a tad more angst-ridden, although the sneers and snarls are still audible. Another mini-rant, "Destroy the USA," is a brief rave-up backed by a ragged garage band sound. The group should never tone things down, as the paltry and radio-friendly approach to "Ephedrine Blue" falls flat quickly. "So Stupid" walks the line between the last track and the earlier efforts with better than expected results -- a suffocating rhythm section as the listener is given a toe-tapping, fist-pumping foundation. The title song stands head and shoulders above the rest, with infectious riffs and a fine punk build to the chorus. "Killed By Ants" recalls Fastball with a Southern swagger, although guitarists Daniel J. Travanti and Steve E. Nix complement each other nicely on the bridge and solos. The fun-loving energy is palpable on the gorgeous yet somewhat light "Shoplifting at Macy's." The faux Brit aping on "Sally I Can't Go to the Beach" does not work, although there seem to be redeeming qualities in the chorus that are never fully realized. "Vitamin Bomb" is a slight improvement, although it comes off like a one-shot demo. ~ Jason MacNeilAlternative Press (p.118) - 5 out of 5 - "[W]eirdly great..." Recorded at The Facility III, New Jersey; Fantasy Studios, California; and Ashe Music Studios, Florida. To some, no bad singer on American Idol has ever been as bad or endearing as William Hung. It's an American Idol tradition to load up the early weeks with singers who are clearly, hilariously bad. Sometimes, they make enough of an impact to stay around for a couple of weeks -- you'll remember that girl from the first season who was ubiquitous until the competition actually got underway and now you can barely remember her name -- but usually once the competition swings into high gear, most of the laughably bad singers are gone. William Hung, somehow, defied expectations and turned into a phenomenon. There were other singers who were worse -- how about the girl who tunelessly scatted through "Route 66" -- but Hung was special, probably because he had so little range and was maniacally driven, not even noticing when the judges had broken down in laughter. It also could have been due to his absurd choice of audition material, the atrocious fluff of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs," the flop sequel to "Living La Vida Loca." Hung sang it as if the song meant something to him even though he didn't understand the words, which gave the Berkley civil engineering student an aura of innocence. All of this fed the phenomenon as American Idol brought him back repeatedly on clip shows, and then he started appearing all over the place, most notably on Keith Olberman's Countdown on MSNBC, who plugged him incessantly. Koch leapt at the opportunity to sign Hung and quickly churned out an album, Inspiration, since a phenomenon like this is clearly short-lived, as are all novelty ...
| | Prodigy Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned CD (2004)
Sex Objects
$15.65 Additional personnel: Juliette Lewis, Liam Gallagher , Ping Pong Bitches, Princess Superstar (vocals); Noel Gallagher (bass guitar); Kool Keith, Shahin Badir, Twista, Paul "Dirtcandy" Jackson. The Prodigy's main man, Liam Howlett, said in an interview that usual bandmembers Keith Flint and Maxim weren't on the new album because this is a back-to-the-core record, one to find the soul of the Prodigy (dancer Leeroy Thornhill left the band years ago -- losing your dancer, always crippling). For anyone rooting for the band, it sounded like a good deal. Howlett came off as a mad beat scientist of great genius on his goin'-it-alone CD The Dirtchamber Sessions, Vol. 1, rockin' the beats with mad style and blowing the dust off Babe Ruth's "The Mexican" just to prove how he was cooler than you. It was a sweet mix, but then nothing -- and then it got worse. But at least Howlett himself called 2002's dull "Baby's Got a Temper" single an F'n piece of S. Seems like he was well aware things were going wrong and has gotten himself back on the right track, so let's all go nuts for Prodigy again. There's an inspired list of guest stars on the album -- Princess Superstar, Kool Keith, Liam Gallagher, Twista, Juliette Lewis -- and Howlett is working hard throughout, twiddling the knobs and making noises fly every which ...
