The String Quartet Tribute to Mariah Carey interprets 12 of the vocalist's hits in instrumental form, featuring violin, viola, cello, and subtle percussion. "Fantasy" gets things started in surprisingly strong form, its bouncy melody somehow retaining the sexiness of the original even without Mariah's vocal. The melodies of "Love Takes Time," "One Sweet Day," and "Hero" are handled beautifully, with the latter having a particularly nice organic quality about it. Other highlights include "Honey" and "I'll Be There." Obviously, the all-instrumental String Quartet Tribute to Mariah Carey doesn't offer the same thrills or allure as an original album by the artist would. But the material's melodies are equally recognizable here, making it an interesting listen for Mariah fans. ~ Johnny Loftus

String Quartet Tribute To Mariah Carey album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a ...

String Quartet Tribute To Mariah Carey music CDs
$14.69 The last few recordings have marked Varner coming into his own as a composer, but he really asserts himself on this CD. Of course he's a world class French horn player, and his caché is increased a hundredfold with a simpatico band featuring saxophonists Tony Malaby and Steve Wilson, and with occasional help from trumpeter Dave Ballou, violinist Mark Feldman, and guitarist Pete McCann, as well as from the dynamic rhythm duo of bassist Cameron Brown and drummer Tom Rainey. No piano is heard on this session of compositions entirely written by Varner. The keyword for this music in the ultra-modern jazz tradition is "counterpoint." The compositions are loaded with interplay between the horns, all getting in their share during the elongated melody lines. It's more like a spirited conversation -- not arguments, but point-counterpoint ad infinitum, and the results are amazing. At 12 minutes, "Maybe Yes" is harmonically evolved and involved, with scattered call and response or shared resonance among the loping horns. 14 minutes of "Samuel Gets the Call" features extended outcries of who, what, when, why, and how set to a bluesy, balladic beat, ending with a bass solo. At just over ten minutes, the title track displays Varner's lucid, fluid, melodic ideas in an Afro-Cuban tinge rhythmically proclaimed by Rainey, and agreed upon by the leader's salty solo and Malaby's biting tenor. "Strident" is the heaviest of these pieces; a distented funk from Varner and Rainey leads to urgent 6/8 timing and an involved, ...
| | Louise Changing Faces: Best Of CD (2001) (Import) England; United Kingdom
String Quartet Tribute To Mariah Carey songs
$10.99 The very same day Robbie Williams announced his departure from Britain's biggest boy band, the then 20-year-old Louise Nurding announced her departure from Britain's biggest girl band. Overshadowed by her more prominent Eternal group members, and then overshadowed by her more prominent fellow departee, few would have predicted a successful solo career. And while she's never reached the multi-platinum and stadium-sized success of Williams, she has quietly managed to balance being both a regular FHM pin-up and a regular chart occupant, scoring 11 hits in six years, all of which are included on Changing Faces. The initial signs, however, weren't too positive. Launching her career with a lighters-in-the-air ballad, "Light of My Life" was a brave decision, but without the powerhouse vocals of her former bandmate Easther Bennett, it was one that didn't quite pay off. And the failure of the Diane Warren-penned "In Walked Love" to reach the Top Ten suggested she might have been a little hasty in her exit. One song changed all that. Modeling itself on Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation era, the breathless vocals, funky R&B rhythms, and risqué video of "Naked" catapulted Louise into the Top Five for the first time. It was a trick she was to repeat again on the '80s-sounding "Undivided Love," and by the time of the sultry chill-out pop of "One Kiss from Heaven," she was one of Britain's biggest pop stars. Another Jackson inspired track, 1997 comeback single "Arms Around the World," which sounded suspiciously like the U.S. number one "Runaway," and a faithful cover of Average White Band's "Let's Go Round Again" continued the run of hits. But it was with her least successful album, Elbow Beach, that she released ...

$9.79 The fresh hip-hop of Young M.C. gave a much-needed dose of happiness to the rap scene on its release in 1989, and it hasn't aged a day since; STONE COLD RHYMIN' includes 13 tracks.
Young MC wasn't given props at the time and he wasn't respected in the years following the release of his debut Stone Cold Rhymin', largely because he worked entirely in the pop-rap/crossover vein. ...
