Fat Wreck Chords' consistently great Live in a Dive series gets an entry from stalwart punk old-schoolers Swingin' Utters. Sure, they issued the four-song EP Live at the Fireside Bowl in July 2003. But that was just a cool little one-off. Dive digs into the Utters' defiant 1978-meets-California punk sound, delivering hits, album cuts, and covers at the same well-practiced, still-ragged rate. Wacky banter, too! Highlights include the spot-on fake British accents of the Clash tributes "Tied Down, Spit On" and "Nowhere Fast," the Cock Sparrer cover "I Got Your Number," and a particularly energizing run through the Juvenile Product nugget "Windspitting Punk." No question, the Swingin' Utters aren't young anymore. But like your old-codger uncle, they're going to tell you just that, and punctuate it with a kick in the ass. They stick defiantly to their signature sound, even as Warped Tour dates nod to current events. Dive's liners goof on punk's latest youth movement, too, and even if the Utters seem a little bitter, they can still bring it on-stage. Of a piece, "15th and T" and "Teenage Genocide" appear in near medley form, harking a little to the "one-two-let's go!" vibe of the Ramones' classic It's Alive. The band also finds time for "The Swingin' Utters quiet storm," an acoustic set that includes "Fruitless Fortunes" and "All That I Can Give," Danny Koski's cool folk-punk number from Dead Flowers, Bottles, Bluegrass, and Bones. The accordion's also unpacked for a few rounds, and even if the Utters' Dead Milkmen and Pogues detours aren't as successful as the working-class punk anthems that really power Live in a Dive, they're the right of a veteran group. Fans: the ghosts of punk rock demand you buy this immediately. ~ Johnny Loftus
Swingin' Utters: Darius Koski (vocals, guitar, accordion); Spike Slawson (vocals, bass guitar); Johnny "Peebucks" Bonnel (vocals); Chuck Worthy (guitar); Greg McEntee (drums).

Live In A Dive CD music
$13.95 Originally released in 2001, this is the debut album by mysterious Norwegian producer/multi-instrumentalist/sampling whiz Kaada. Despite being widely hailed by critics in Scandinavia, it took Ipecac Records, who discovered the album via an unsolicited copy, for it to finally get a U.S. release in 2003. It's a fitting match, since this album has the same kind of warm, reverb-y production that Ipecac head honcho Mike Patton often favors (see Fantomas' Director's Cut), and has a collage-type avant-garde pop/rock feel that's not a million ...

Live In A Dive music CDs
$16.65 Some Dion fans will disagree, but this 21-song overview of his 1969-76 material isn't the best way to get a handle on this period, in which he'd fully evolved from his early rock & roll star roots into a more mature singer/songwriter. His records during this time were both inconsistent in quality and widely varying in style, from the acoustic folk-rock of 1970s Sit Down Old Friend to the strange Phil Spector-produced (and over-produced) sessions of the mid-'70s. They work better heard on their own, rather than sampled piecemeal (and not sequenced chronologically ...

Live In A Dive CD music
$12.15 Radiocraft emerged on the Detroit music scene in 2002 with the release of their debut, IN STEREO. Recorded by award-winning producer, Dave Feeny (Blanche), IN STEREO was hailed by fans and critics alike as a rare find among indie offerings. The record includes twelve tracks of alt/country inspired rock that Brian McCollum of The Detroit Free Press called, "a pleasant surprise... seemingly out of nowhere." But the surprises weren't over yet.Shortly thereafter, Jim Beam® Bourbon awarded the band $2000 as part of their "Benefiting Emerging Artists in Music" campaign. The program's advisory board was co-chaired by alt/rock icons Matthew Sweet and Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens, who said, "It is great to see deserving bands like Radiocraft take a step towards reaching their goals, while still maintaining complete independence." The band's steady progress is due to a firm, and rather familial foundation.Originating in Romeo, Michigan, Radiocraft formed around the nucleus of seasoned guitarist/songwriter Kevin Breslin and singer/ songwriter Suzie Ferro. When the pair realized their collaboration was producing fruit, the team co-opted Ferro's brothers, Ronnie and Danny Alcini (guitar & drums respectively) and bassist, Ken Williams. The chemistry of that ...
