A cursory listen to DISCLAIMER reveals a debt to such U.S. heavy rock bands as Papa Roach and Drowning Pool, no great shock since Seether producer Jay Baumgardner had previously worked with both of those bands. The surprising part is that this very American-sounding nu-metal band actually comes from South Africa. Their homeland is where the Dave Matthews Band comparisons abruptly end, though. Seether goes for the time-tested power-trio format that's served hard-hitting rock bands in good stead throughout the decades, from Mountain to Nirvana. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Shaun Morgan is at the heart of the group's sound, his angst-ridden lyrics and emotive delivery occasionally suggesting the influence of the aforementioned Kurt Cobain-fronted band. Grunge flavoring to the contrary, though, this is a solidly contemporary band whose sheer sonic force puts them directly in the forefront of circa-2002 heavy rock.

Disclaimer II
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the ...
| | Evanescence Fallen CD (2003)
Disclaimer II
$8.99 Evanescence won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. FALLEN was nominated for Album Of The Year and for Best Rock Album. "Bring Me To Life" won for Best Hard Rock Performance. The song was also nominated for Best Rock Song.
Picture Tori Amos fronting Nickelback and you'll get an idea of the sound behind Evanescence, an Arkansas quartet whose introduction to the world came via the DAREDEVIL soundtrack. With its debut FALLEN, Evanescence further pushes the envelope on the aforementioned description, with frontwoman Amy Lee pouring her light-yet-strong vocals into the aggro-rock workout "Bring Me to Life" and industrial trip-hop of "My Last Breath." Although guitarists Ben Moody and John LeCompt leave no riff unplayed on hard-hitting cuts like "Going Under" and "Taking Over Me," Lee brings a nice balance to the table with her gorgeous piano ...

| | New Wet Kojak Do Things CD (2000)
Disclaimer II
$27.95 It is a rare thing when a band that begins as, essentially, the side project of members of another band evolves beyond its origins and becomes a strong enough band to deserve recognition on its own merit. New Wet Kojak has accomplished this feat. Formed by Girls Against Boys' Scott McCloud and Johnny Temple (along with Nick Pellicciotto, Charles Bennington, and Geoff Turner), although they share a singer in McCloud, the two bands are so individual that each are pioneers in their own right. Whereas GvsB has allied itself with a sort of D.C.-flavord post-punk scene populated with the likes of Fugazi and Jawbox, New Wet Kojak picks up on McCloud's peripheral persona as a gritty lounge singer, and his tendency toward writing stream of consciousness beat poetry, and sets it to music that is an inescapabley catchy blend of jazz, rock, and techno. With Do Things, New Wet Kojak's third release, they seem to have perfected their attack, making their genre-blending style seem perfectly natural. McCloud's lyrics are characteristically hip, with ...
