Proving one can sound original even while tapping into ancient musical genres, Chicago's Jungle Rot have found a way to grasp the exact moment of transition where speedy thrash metal gave way to slower, more intricate death metal (somewhere in the late 1980s). Evident in their excellent third album, 2004's Fueled by Hate, this heavy metal formula is fast, simple, catchy, and, unlike most new millennium metal -- immediate. In fact, it's this very immediacy which is likely to make two- to three- minute standouts like "Let Them Die" and "Gain Control" sound so refreshing to most metalheads' over-taxed ears. Built on chunky, groovy riffs and athletic but concise drumming, the above also benefit from Dave Matrise's throaty, but always distinct vocals -- rather like an intelligible version of Obituary's John Tardy. Additional highlights include opener "Face Down," which sounds like classic Unleashed (minus the Viking lyrics), and a string of wonderfully clutter-free numbers ("Fractured," "Gasping for Air," "Habit Fulfilled") owing a great debt to German legends Sodom. More importantly, besides fulfilling the most basic heavy metal need to unleash pent-up energy and aggression through music, Fueled by Hate also achieve the rarest of qualities for a heavy metal album; it's loads of fun. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Jungle Rot Fueled By Hate Songs Fueled By Hate Music Review Purchase Fueled By Hate CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Origin Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas CD (2002)
Fueled By Hate album
$11.75 Origin's specialty is the kind of inhumanly technical, high-speed death metal that causes listeners to sit back and say, "Wow, how on earth do they play that stuff?" There are few parts of this CD where the drums (which are heavily triggered and almost electronic sounding) are not going at full speed -- either with some kind of blastbeat or double-bass drum part -- and about half the time, they're doing so in some difficult, uneven time signature. Meanwhile, the two guitars are also playing complicated parts, interweaving and harmonizing with one another rather than merely playing the same riffs or splitting up into lead versus rhythm roles. But, as amazing as much of the playing is, some of the songwriting seems to suffer under the weight of all the technicality; that is, the music is impressive as you listen to it, but it is not all memorable once it stops playing. ("Insurrection" and "Perversion ...
| | Decapitated Organic Hallucinosis CD (2006)
Fueled By Hate CD music
$13.85 With the departure of their founding vocalist -- the heartwarmingly named Sauron -- the remaining members of Polish death metal veterans Decapitated have apparently decided to mark the installment of his successor, Covan, with a wholesale change of direction for their fourth studio album, Organic Hallucinosis. Launching off of their new frontman's more versatile skills in delivering various stages of deathly grunting, the band has stepped up the complexity of their songwriting to match, while establishing a non-traditional death metal aesthetic somewhere between the lopsided time signatures of Meshuggah and down-tuned power grooves of Pantera. And even though the exceedingly challenging results don't usually make for ideal moshpit conditions, ...

| | Jungle Rot Warzone CD (2006)
Fueled By Hate songs
$13.15 Jungle Rot won't go down in history as the most original or innovative band in the world, but those who fancy American-style, thrash-minded, non-Scandinavian death metal with a late '80s/early '90s mindset can appreciate the fact that they generally provide solid, if predictable, albums, and Warzone is no exception. This 2006 release doesn't break any new ground for Jungle Rot (not that any longtime fans expected it to), but the Midwestern combo continues to sound enjoyably focused 11 years after its formation. And that is admirable, considering all the personnel changes that Jungle Rot has had along the way. On Warzone, lead singer/founder/guitarist Dave Matrise is the only remaining original member; bassist James Genenz, guitarist Geoff Bub, and drummer Neil Zacharek are more recent arrivals. Regardless, Jungle Rot still sounds like Jungle Rot, and that means having an unwavering devotion ...

Fueled By Hate music CDs
$10.15 Recorded live at The Ritz, New York on March 21, 1992. Includes liner notes by Billy Milano, Dan Lilker, Scott Ian and Charles Benante.
S.O.D. originally began as a project for Anthrax songwriters Scott Ian and Charlie Benante to release material that their singer Joey Belladonna could not sing. That was back in 1985, so it is interesting that in 1992, only months before they fired Belladonna from Anthrax, that they decided to reunite for a concert in New York City. This is almost all of Speak English or Die! with a few covers thrown in for good measure. What is truly entertaining is the between-song banter between the audience and caustic frontman Billy Milano. His angry, funny tirades emphasize the more humorous aspects of this project. Classics like "Milk," "Chromatic Death," and "Kill Yourself" are here in all their offensive ...

Fueled By Hate music CDs
$11.35 Bob James was far from predictable in the 1990s, when his albums ranged from the embarrassing Playin' Hooky to the excellent Straight Up (an unexpected return to straight-ahead jazz) and the enjoyable pop-jazz offering Grand Piano Canyon. Drawing on pop, jazz and new age, The Swan is a bit lightweight...on the whole, but does have its moments. The CD's most substantial tunes include "Prospero" and "Ensenada ...
