| | Jaga Jazzist Day CD Jaga Jazzist Discography of CDs
One track from the Stix album reappears, but otherwise Day is one stuffed EP of new sounds from the Norwegian jazzers Jaga Jazzist. The first half of the EP is taken up by glitchy and light remixes plus the new track "Two Things," one of the most laptop-sounding, non-jazzy numbers the unit has ever produced. It's a precious keeper, but like the remixes it's more an interesting diversion than a full-on Jaga classic. The live tracks on the EP's second half are where the band really shines, especially on the busy "Another Day." Hearing the nine-piece band live and through the eyes of remixers Herbert and DAT Politics is a welcome change for fans who have devoured A Livingroom Hush and The Stix. The full-lengths are more rewarding, so this quirky and crammed collection should be Jaga Jazzist purchase number two or three. ~ David Jeffries Day Review

Day album
$13.39 Here, the accordionist from the chamber-folk-jazz group Tin Hat Trio makes his solo debut on saxophonist/composer John Zorn's Tzadik record label. With this release, Rob Burger displays his multi-instrumentalist propensities, backed by the rock-solid rhythm section of drummer/percussionist Kenny Wollesen and bassist Greg ...
| | Jaga Jazzist Animal Chin CD (2002)
Day CD music
$10.35 On this absolutely intoxicating album, Animal Chin, Norway's Jaga Jazzist brilliantly combine everything from Stereolab to Mego recording artists like Fennesz to Autechre and Aphex Twin. The title track brilliantly alternates between laid-back jazz and tweaked Squarepusher drum'n'bass -- that is, until it spirals into a retro chic, vibes-and-synthesizer, bachelor-pad groove. "Low Battery" has an eerie slow-motion shimmer that's complimented ...
| | Prefuse 73 One Word Extinguisher CD (2003)
Day music CDs
$14.49 Prefuse 73's second album for Warp should be the one that catapults Scott Herren into the programming firmament occupied by Warp mainstays like Autechre and Aphex Twin. A fascinating collection of glitchy breakbeats and inventive, melodic experimental techno, One Word Extinguisher is a set of electronica that's nearly as challenging as Autechre's ...
| | Bill Frisell Unspeakable CD (2004)
Day songs
$15.65 On UNSPEAKABLE, Bill Frisell blends his distinctively lush, cerebral guitar style with the easy feel of his 1990s Americana-themed albums and a bit of the avant-garde sensibility of his '80s work, while never directly referencing either of these phases. In fact, the overall sound of UNSPEAKABLE is something new for Frisell--with a few notable exceptions, the record leans toward groove-heavy jams. The presence of horns, Adam Dorn's synthesizer, and the 858 Strings (a violin/viola/cello trio employed throughout the album for accent and effect) brings to mind, at times, the orchestrated, cinematic funk of '70s-era Isaac Hayes ("White Fang"), and, at others, '60s lounge music ...

$14.99 Enrico Rava's restrained trumpet playing has been regarded in modern times as perfectly reflective of the ECM sound. The emerging ...

| | Odetta Best Of The M.C. Records Years 1999-2005 CD (2006) (Import) Import; United Kingdom
Day music CDs
$17.59 Although folk and jazz singer Odetta is inextricably tied to memories of the collegiate folk revival of the early 1960s, she has remained active in the decades since. The compilation BEST OF THE M.C. RECORDS YEARS 1999-2005 contains tracks from Odetta's three albums for the label, BLUES EVERYWHERE I GO, LOOKING FOR A HOME and GONNA LET IT SHINE. Each album has a theme -- gutbucket 1920s blues, the songs of Leadbelly, and spirituals, respectively -- but hearing the tunes together like this, it's ...
| | Larry Cordle Took Down And Put Up CD (2007)
Day songs
$10.69 Larry Cordle has the best of both possible worlds. His songs have been cut by folks like Ricky Skaggs, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, and George Strait, providing him with a comfortable income. With his band Lonesome Standard Time -- on this album Booie Beach, lead guitar; Kim Gardner, dobro; Mike Anglin, electric and standup bass, baritone vocals; Chris Davis, mandolin, tenor vocals; and Kristin Scott Benson on banjo -- he plays the "traditional" bluegrass he loves. Traditional is in quotes because Cordle is an artist who's able to write tunes that fit onto country, Americana, and folk play lists as easily as they do on the bluegrass charts. If you know him at all, it may be for his song "Murder on Music Row," an indictment of the country music business that ironically became a big country hit when it was cut by Alan Jackson and George Strait. But Cordle isn't a one-hit wonder. He's been playing and picking traditional (although mostly self-written) bluegrass music for most of his life, and is dedicated to keeping the form vital. Like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley before him, he tracks down great young talents and gives them a leg up while providing himself with the stellar backing that Lonesome Standard Time has become known for. "Hole in the Ground" is a coal-mining song in the tradition of Merle Travis, and while Cordle is modest about its virtues, it can hold its head up with the best work of Travis. The band's vocal harmonies and the evocative work of Benson's banjo and guest artist Jenee Fleenor's fiddle give the song its appropriately hopeless vibe. "Song for Keith," a co-write with Randy Scaggs, is a tribute to Keith Whitley, a country/bluegrass singer who died at the age of 34, just as his career was taking off. It's a traditional country lament dominated again by banjo, fiddle, and Cordle's aching tenor vocal. "Rough Around the Edges" is a Cordle co-write with J.P. Pennington and Les Taylor of Exile. It was a big hit for Travis Tritt, who joins Cordle on this bluegrass version that features Davis on mandolin and Gardner's dobro. "B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Blues)" has been cut by many singers but hasn't been a hit yet. It's a fine country blues that would have been great in the hands of Jim Reeves. "Old Cheater's Blues" is another tune that could be a mainstream hit, a cheatin' waltz with a clever lyric and great melody. Benson's muted banjo, Gardner's dobro, and Beach's lead guitar give the song its soul. Other standouts include "'67 Chevy Malibu," "The Hero of the Creek," a song praising the simple life, saved from cliché by Cordle's lyrical skills and bright melody, ...

| | Doug Stone Live At Billy Bob's Texas CD (2009) Bonus Track
Day CD music
$11.55 Doug Stone is a patient man. He was already past 30 when he got his first record deal. He made up for lost time quickly though; he scored a total of eight Top Ten hits before the end of 1992. Stone is one of those authentic country singers, equally at home with hard honky tonk or poetic love ballads. He delivers each song as if he authored it. And indeed, who could ever hear "Faith in Me Faith in You" by anyone else and believe it? This song is so inclusive and authentic it could have been part of President Barack Obama's campaign for election. Live at Billy Bob's Texas features Stone and his fine backing band playing the hell out of his hits and fan favorites. This is no mere color-by-numbers fan set, but a beautifully recorded, on-the-wire performance by one of the great singers in the country tradition -- even if the masses don't currently remember that. The ballad singers on the country charts owe plenty to Stone whether they admit it or not. Stone learned his ballad style from the best of them: George Jones and George Strait, Marty Robbins and Don Williams. The evidence is in his delivery of tracks like "Little Houses" and "Busy Being in Love," tough uptempo rocking country numbers like "That's How We Roll" and "I'd Be Better Off (In a Pine Box)," and even ...
