Inspired by the lives of Jackie Kallen and James "Lights Out" Toney, Meg Ryan stars as the sassy, brassy Jackie who is determined to change street punk "Lethal" Luther Shaw into a prizefighter. Before they can realize their dream of a championship bout, they must learn what it takes to stand in each other's corner. Also stars Omar Epps. DVD special features include 2 featurettes "A Ringside Seat," "Queen of the Ring," more. Meg Ryan stars in this fictionalized account of real-life boxing manager Jackie Kallen, the first female to ever make a name for herself in the sport. As the film begins she's just an assistant to the owner of a sleazy sporting arena, but her antagonism toward a mafia-affiliated boxing bigwig (Tony Shalhoub) and her hunch about the innate boxing talent of a young street thug named Luther (Omar Epps) lead her to take up managing. She recruits a retired trainer (Charles S. Dutton, who also directed) to mold Luther into a champ, and starts pushing and climbing through the sport's rampant sexism. The script by Cheryl Edwards is packed with platitudes and great throwaway lines, and to its credit the film doesn't shy away from showing Kallen's less flattering angles. Ryan looks and sounds great, sporting a fun Midwestern accent and a series of sexy outfits as she sashays through the cigar smoke and testosterone, tough-talking her way to victory in argument after argument. Though set in the present, AGAINST THE ROPES has a grungy 1970s feel to it, recalling ROCKY, THE CHAMP, THE MAIN EVENT and other films of the era. The real-life Kallen served as an associate producer. Against The Ropes Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) round after round of first class entertainment round#1-feeling each other out! round#2-the two fighters looked a little out of shape. round #3-well the taller fighter seems to be gaining an unfair advantage. round#4-a little more busy round with the referree getting a few in. round #5-the shorter fighter seems to be fading,he's a little wobbly on his feet. round #6- Well!! its all over folks, right out of the blue,What a Punch,What a HayMaker,he never knew what hit him. A slow fight at first,But it ended up,with the challenger KO'ing the Champ!! Kind of a shame in a way, thats the end of a great Champion!! But, on the other hand, the start of a Beautifull relationship!!! Submitted by Nomlas, Vancouver, B.C. Canada (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Knock out. I thought this was a good flick. Had comedy & drama & boxing of course! I love Meg Ryan it it was fun to see her in something besides the normal girlie chick flicks. I liked how she had a mind of her own, was opinionated & knew what she wanted. Her accent drove me crazy & some of her clothing ideas were biazzare. Omar Epps was hot in this movie & I liked the relationship that was formed between him & Ryan. I think there could have been more fighting besides the brief second clips & the last fight scene. Still worth the watch for the mood I was in! Just shows girls can be better than guys!! Submitted by lw (Iowa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$21.45 Though HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN director Alfonso Cuaron still holds the crown for best film in the series, David Yates is making an attempt at a coup with HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE. Dark, gleefully funny, and beautifully shot, this adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s novel should please fans despite numerous changes to the 650-page source material. In this sixth film in the series, Harry’s (Daniel Radcliffe) inevitable confrontation with the dark wizard Voldemort grows closer, and Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) wants the young student to be prepared. He guides Harry through a memory of a young Voldemort, but an important moment is missing. Harry must extract this memory from the new Hogwarts teacher, Horace Slughorn (a perfectly slimy Jim Broadbent), who is as eager for fame as he is reluctant to revisit this painful moment. Meanwhile, romance rules the school of witches and wizards, with Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) refusing to admit their feelings for each other. Harry also harbors a secret love of his own: Ron’s younger sister, Ginny (Bonnie Wright). But despite his crush, Harry keeps an eye on Snape (Alan Rickman) and Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton), who may be responsible for attacks on the school.
HALF-BLOOD PRINCE deftly balances the humor of Hogwarts heartbreak ...
