Yes's TOPOGRAPHY represents the group's undying devotion to ambitious, progressive elements within rock parameters. As always, Yes push at those parameters in order to make complex, innovative, and compelling music.
Classic rock legends Yes are probably not even aware of this record's existence. Despite the fancy-pants packaging and the extensive liner notes that seem to present Topography: The Yes Anthology as a peerless retrospective of a band whose music has become "a phenomenon of 'classical' proportions," this collection contains nothing on it that represents the prog pioneers' '70s heyday. What it does include are numerous post-Big Generator studio "hits" and live recordings of classics like "Awaken" and "And You and I," culled from recent Yes and Yes-related material. There's a nice version of Relayer's "To Be Over" from Steve Howe's 2001 solo release Natural Timbre. But there's nothing new or rare here, so fanatics need not heed the junkie's call. As usual, it's the casual fan looking for a quick fix who will mistakenly pick up this exercise in deception instead of spending his or her well-earned money on a proper overview, such as Atco's Yesstory. ~ James Christopher Monger

Topography: The Yes Anthology CD music
$30.49 After issuing three consecutive studio double LPs, Chicago topped themselves with this four-album live box set. As the title suggests, At Carnegie Hall, Vols. 1-4 (Chicago IV) (1971) finds the band at the venerable New York City venue during a five-night stand (April 5-April 10) in the spring of 1971. The septet -- which includes the respective talents of Terry Kath (lead guitar/vocals), Robert Lamm ...

Topography: The Yes Anthology music CDs
$17.25 Recorded between 1969 & 2003. Includes liner notes by Chris Welch.
Yes' second (and least successful) album was a transitional effort; the group trying for a more produced and sophisticated sound through the use of an orchestra -- the use of orchestra was apparently Jon Anderson's idea, and the rest of the group, except for Peter Banks, went along with it, as did producer Tony Colton, a member of Head Hands & Feet and a friend of Anderson's. Even so, the results weren't conventional, because the group didn't tone down or turn down ...
| | Yes Drama CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Topography: The Yes Anthology songs
$6.19 It was widely assumed that when vocalist/songwriter Jon Anderson left Yes at the end of the '70s, the band was doomed. Most folks forgot that bassist/composer Chris Squire was the other founding member of the band, and he had as much to do with their sound as Anderson. It was surprising enough when the band decided to continue with a new vocalist and keyboardist. It was even more surprising when the new members turned out to be Trevor Horn (later a famed pop producer) and Geoff Downes (who would soon depart with Steve Howe for Asia). And it was downright shocking when the resultant album DRAMA turned out to be a great one.
While Horn's voice is in the same general range as Anderson's, he tends to blend more with the vocals ...

| | Ian Brown Solarized CD (2004) Bonus Track
Topography: The Yes Anthology songs
$10.69 SOLARIZED is former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown's fourth solo outing. Like his legendary first band and previous solo albums, SOLARIZED combines heady electric guitar sounds, club-derived dance beats, winding Middle Eastern-themed melodies, and memorable pop hooks. There are idiosyncratic flourishes here and there, like the loungy, down-tempo trip-hop of "The Sweet Fantastic" and the mariachi-styled horns on "Time Is My Everything," but, for the most part, Brown sticks to the groovy, swirling guitar-based Brit-pop he does best.
Opener "Longsight M13" leads off with a snake-charmer verse, orbiting guitar leads, and electronic frippery before sinking into the heavy dance groove of the chorus. The expansive melody of "Destiny or Circumstance" proves Brown has retained his ability to construct durable tunes, while "Kiss Ya Lips (No I.D.)" rides a jumpy, infectious house beat. "Keep What Ya Got" was co-written by Oasis figurehead Noel Gallagher, and the resulting single (which bears traces of both Oasis and the Stone Roses) is a textbook example of minor-key Brit-pop. The album is shot through with deeply textured production and effects, backwards guitar, and massive solos in ways that should please Brown fanatics.
On his fourth solo album, Ian Brown marches on as confidently as ever, mixing mystical aural textures with massively addictive melodies. Album opener "Longsight M13" is as catchy as any song in Brown's back catalog and continues the spacy vibes of his previous full-length effort, Music of the Spheres. "Time Is My Everything" blends Stone Roses ephemera with dusty Spanish horns straight out of an Ennio Morricone spaghetti Western film score, while a goth guitar backdrop on "Destiny or Circumstance" warps the mind like nothing since the Sisters of Mercy. There is sometimes ...
