| | Akwid Kickin' It Juntos CD (2005)
Ken Laszlo songs
$11.49 Jae-P and the duo Akwid join forces in the Latin-hip-hop summit meeting that is KICKIN' IT JUNTOS. Between the three of them, they possess a surfeit of rapping skills, as they rhyme in Spanish over a variety of tracks. While some tunes offer a straight-up West Coast hip-hop sound, others venture a bit further afield, dipping into a pan-Latin approach that complements Jae-P and Akwid's ...

| | Pere Ubu Why I Hate Women CD (2006)
Ken Laszlo songs
$10.79 Named after a hypothetical and non-existent Jim Thompson novel, Pere Ubu's 13th studio album is one of the most interesting of their long tenure, and testament to the continually replenishing spiky ingenuity of group leader (and sole original member) David Thomas. WHY I HATE WOMEN examines a living slice of dread, as expressed by nervous drums, atmospheric guitars, and Thomas's anxiety-ridden singing. The jerky rhythms and vocals of the opening number "Two Girls (One Bar)" are like opening a door and being greeted by the entirety of the early 1980s no-wave scene. Ditto the unsettling swamp-fevered "Blue Velvet," which reverberates with David Lynchian despair and desire, and the hopped-up "Caroleen," which plays like a love song for troubled adolescents, without the emo bravado.
2006 album from David Thomas and his Ubu boys, old and new. Pere Ubu have really come out fighting with Why I Hate Women, racing towards all horizons at full tilt, pushing the experimental envelope further than ever, but also tightening up their trademark avant-punk attack. The rhythm section (Ubu's longest serving) of bassist Michele Temple and drummer Steve Mehlman is tauter and leaner than ever before. Robert Wheeler's bravura performance on vintage electronics has him coming over as rural Ohio's answer to Sun Ra, splattering analogue synth and theremin all over the music with wild, visionary abandon. Guitarist (and newest recruit) Keith Moliné veers between wayward sonic expressionism and disciplined garage thrust. At the eye of the storm is singer David Thomas, a true rock maverick at the height of his powers. His vocal approach shows a startling new melodicism, a plaintive purity of expression that cuts through his familiar repertoire of radical voicings and techniques. 11 tracks. Smog Veil. 2006.

| | Switch 20th Century Masters The Millenium Collection: The Best Of CD (2001) Remastered
Ken Laszlo album
$6.79 Originally released on Gordy Records. Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway.
Throughout the '90s, alt-rock pioneer Perry Farrell became caught in the DJ culture emerging from the underground and slowly permeating the mainstream. Two years after the nasally singer contributed a pair of drum-and-bass-driven tracks to the Jane's Addiction/Porno For Pyro compilation REV, the father of Lollapalooza returned with a solo debut more steeped in electronica and shaped by a renewed interest in his Jewish background.
Aided by an array of talent including reggae legend Mad Professor, Jane's guitarist Dave Navarro, PFP's Martyn LeNoble and Jon Brion, Farrell hop-scotches through a number of different dance-driven styles. "Seeds" is a light, swirling stab at Orb-flavored techno, "To Me" rides a rubbery dancehall rhythm driven by the piano of War's Lonnie Jordan and "Nua Nua" is a Middle Eastern tinged outing sparked by clattering beats. Among the themes touched on are ones of global renewal (a drum-and-bass flavored "Happy Birthday Jubilee") and the spiritual importance of song in society (the ambient title track). Although cuts like "Say Something" and "Shekina" occasionally drift off into the ether, SONG YET TO BE SUNG finds Farrell once again finding a way to challenge both himself and his fans.
