| | Martin Sasse Close Encounter CD - Import Martin Sasse Discography of CDs
Close Encounter is Martin Sasse's follow up to the well-received Groovy Affair in 2003. Like that album, the group has invited a high-powered guest -- altoist Vincent Herring -- to sit in. The match, like adding guitarist Peter Bernstein on Groovy Affair, is an inspired one that throws the proceedings into high gear. Except for Harold Arlen's "Over the Rainbow," all of these pieces are originals, written or co-written by pianist Martin Sasse, bassist Henning Gailing, drummer Hendrik Smock, and Herring. The album kicks off with "Don't Let It Go," an airy, quiet groove that includes some lovely solo work by both Herring and Sasse. "Blue Herring" captures a more bop-ish mood, allowing Herring to really cut loose against Sasse's block chords and Gailing and Smock's propulsive rhythm. One of the most pleasant standouts on Close Encounter is the impressionist "I Will Sing You a Lullaby," featuring Herring's beautiful flute work. The piece floats like a calm reverie, leaving one wishing it lasted for more than four minutes. The group never opts for the obvious. Herring opens "Over the Rainbow" with a Charlie Parker-ish warm-up before the trio chimes in for a nice turn on this most familiar of songs. Bop and post-bop fans will enjoy the heady mixture of the players on Close Encounter, and find it a worthy follow up to Groovy Affair. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Close Encounter album
$13.89 Stan Hope has been in the jazz business for more than 40 years, but Pastels is only his third album as a leader. The influence of Erroll Garner on Hope's approach to the music is evident, not only in the playing, but in Hope's selection of four Garner-composed tunes for this session. To Hope's credit, "Misty" is not one of them. Hope's playing sparkles like Garner's, but is not as fanciful or as ornate. Hope doesn't engage in those long, twisting runs Garner is noted for, but Hope swings and ...
| | Bill Cunliffe It's About Love CD (2003)
Close Encounter CD music
$14.29 It's About Love, an acoustic post-bop date that pianist Bill Cunliffe co-leads with saxman Gary Foster, is subtitled The Music of Reed Kotler. Upon seeing that name, some listeners are bound to ask, "Who is Reed Kotler?" -- and the answer is that Kotler is a talented but underexposed jazz composer from the San Francisco Bay Area. Although Kotler isn't well known, Cunliffe and Foster obviously think highly of his work; It's About Love marks the second time the improvisers ...

| | Blacktop I've Got A Baaad Feeling About This CD (2003)
Close Encounter CD music
$11.59 I've Got a Baaad Feeling About This turned out to be a remarkably prophetic title for the first and only album from Blacktop. Formed as a collaboration between former Gories leader Mick Collins and Fireworks frontal lobe Darin Lin Wood, the band staggered through sessions for one album, a U.S. tour, and a second session that resulted in a few singles before personal conflicts and chemical dependence issues caused the band to collapse after little more than a year. It's hard to imagine Blacktop having an especially long shelf life, given the often scattershot recording habits of the principals and the band's dark, swampy ...

| | MDM Modern Digital Militia CD (2008) Modern Digital Militia
Close Encounter music CDs
$13.19 "Experiences are the building-blocks of our existence," states MDM's principal songwriter and frontman, Nux. "Just when you think you know it all, something takes place in the world or an emotion is stumbled upon that takes you to the next level. We are never finished learning and we learn through experience. This is what pushes us forward."And a forward journey it has been...From its chrysalis stage as a two-man project in the late nineties, MDM has developed into a full-scale five-piece live machine. The project has taken on its own life form shaping and sculpting its own sound through the influences of the various members. This sound ranges from hard aggressive techno to more ambient and delicate soundscapes to allow the listener to travel along with the band as each album progresses.Constantly striving to create new grooves and beats, MDM still manages to stay true and pay homage to the original pioneers of the industrial genre yet taking the sound to an exciting new level with a repertoire of over 70 songs contained within six album releases, only made possible with the precise mixture of old and new from each member of the collective. They have also supplied music for films such as The Matrix Reloaded and Jimmy and Judy, winner of Best Film Award at the San Francisco Film Festival, as well as several other musical pieces for commercials, etc.Topics of war, greed, corruption, environmental destruction helm one end of the spectrum while introspective themes of emotional distress, sadness, anger, love, and heartbreak form the other end. A broad mix that is sure to take the listener in and out of various places in their minds eye, and with militaristic uniforms, flags, intense lighting and a charismatic presence, the live element compliments the themes explored in each piece of music creating an even stronger visual appearance.Time-tested, hard-working and a true passion for their craft has propelled MDM into the future as one of the leading up-and-comer industrial acts in Canada. They have garnered a worldwide fan base through grassroots promotions and marketing and have always made time to listen to their fans after all they are the true militia that keeps this machine running!!!"What is good? All that heightens the feeling of power, the will to power, power itself in man." Friedrich Nietzsche*** Press Quotes:"MDM did everything right on "Modern Digital Militia" and transformed ...
