Celebrating their 10th anniversary, World Entertainment Network released a series of special items and trinkets, one of which is the label-encompassing Music Rough Guides: Out of This World sampler album. The attempt is to draw from all eras and locales of the Rough Guides' 100-plus albums in the space of ten songs. As a result, it can perhaps be doomed from the outset, but the pieces chosen are, in fact, representative of the major movements in the multitude of albums from which they're culled. Latin jazz starts things off with a bit of mambo, quickly moving into some modern Arabesque (Arabic electronica) with Aisha Kandisha, and roots music with Larry Sparks' bluegrass. The modern multiethnic dance music of bhangra is followed by the older multiethnic dance music of tango (represented by the venerable master Roberto Goyeneche, no less). The heart-rending songs of fado are represented by Jose Afonso, and Buckwheat Zydeco brings the sound back to something with more kick to represent the Louisiana end of things. Before ending, the album turns to some Bollywood and West African Sona Diabate. The album finishes with the completion of a circle, using a Joe Arroyo track from the first Rough Guide album ever pressed. Ultimately, with the consistent delivery of the Rough Guides, there was no hope of covering the whole range in one album. Nonetheless, the sampler does a fine job of giving a minor glimpse into each sphere of influence with a fine track. Omissions galore, but allowable. ~ Adam Greenberg

| | Django Reinhardt Nuits De Saint-Germain-Des-Pres CD (2003) Remastered
Music Rough Guides: Out Of This World
$18.59 The Gitanes label has taken it upon itself to reissue on CD some of the late work of gypsy jazz giant Django Reinhardt. The tracks that make up Nuits de Saint-Germain des-Prés come from three Decca sessions dating from May of 1951 to January 1953, the final year of his life. The title comes from the reopening of the infamous club Saint-Germain des-Prés, whose reopening coincided with Reinhardt showing off his bop chops to a host of notable American jazzmen, including Benny Carter, Roy Eldridge, Charlie Parker, Don Byas, and others. The bands on all of these sessions are comprised of Young Turks, most notably a youthful Pierre Michelot on bass. The other constants are drummer Pierre Lemarchand and Hubert Fol on clarinets and ...

Music Rough Guides: Out Of This World
$10.49 Part of the Jazz in Paris series by the Gitanes label, this compilation draws from Django Reinhardt's last pair of recording sessions in 1953 (the first eight tracks make up the original Nuages album and served as a precursor for a Norman Granz Jazz at the Philharmonic world tour), which were two of his strongest ever. Gone was the shimmering but funky acoustic guitar of his gypsy swing youth, and in its place was a spanking new electric Gibson that, with its extended quick action, allowed him further flights of fancy not only on the fretboard ...
