1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water ...

$7.59 Jefferson Airplane were less focused in 1969 than they had been in the Summer of Love two years before. Recorded at the Fillmore East, these performances find the Airplane coming off their most recent album, Volunteers, released a month earlier, with the band a lot looser (drug use aside) ...

| | Donna Leonhart Bein' Green CD (2001)
Miss Soul songs
$16.15 Vocalist Donna Leonhart, the wife of bassist Jay Leonhart and mother of trumpeter Michael and vocalist Carolyn Leonhart, is in fine form on her first-ever commercial release. Her voice is delicate and fairly high, confident in pitch, more than able to convey the subtleties of these well-chosen songs. The album's quirky charm, however, owes much to Michael Leonhart, who produced and arranged all the tracks and not only played trumpet and flügelhorn, but also filled in on piano, guitar, melodica, and drums and percussion. A host of other musicians also appear: Jay Leonhart on bass, Joel Frahm on tenor sax, Chris Potter on bass clarinet, Lee Musiker on piano, Paulo Braga on drums, and more. Michael Leonhart utilizes them in just the right combinations, giving every song an entirely different flavor and mood. There are a couple of Wizard of Oz numbers: "If I Only Had a Brain" blossoms midway with a marvelously harmonized horn break, and "Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead" becomes a full-tilt jazz vehicle, with Frahm and Musiker taking hot solos. On "Angel Eyes," Donna Leonhart's vocal is framed by bluesy, low-register acoustic guitar, wailing plunger trumpet, and nothing more. Other highlights include a string quartet arrangement of "Here's That Rainy Day," lush readings of "Lazy Afternoon," Cole Porter's "Dream Dancing," and a saloon-style, piano-and-voice curtain call with "I Keep Goin' Back to Joe's." But what really takes the cake is the title track, "Bein' Green," the Kermit the Frog classic. Bear in mind that Donna Leonhart is a talented woman who opted out of public life for quite a while. When she sings this song of hard-won yet tentative self-acceptance, it is a candid and personal moment, a singularly moving and honest way to make one's debut. ~ David R. Adler
Donna Leonhart has been singing since she was a little girl. She appeared off-Broadway and at benefits with Liza Minelli when they were both young pups. Donna married bassist Jay Leonhart and soon they had two children, Michael and Carolyn, who are both professional musicians (see michaelleonhart , carolynleonhart , and/or SteelyDan ). Donna performed occasionally but her heart was really into ...
