2007 two CD collection features all three volumes on two discs! Recorded in just one night, from the late hours of November 12 to the early hours of November 13, 1956, this session is more like a live date than a trip to the studio, with no repeated numbers and, consequently, no alternate takes. While Hawes' was most often heard in a trio format, this release showcases the pianist in a quartet featuring the guitar magic of Jim Hall. 17 tracks. Definitive Records.

Originally issued on three LPs, the music resulting from Hampton Hawes' All Night Session! was stereophonically recorded for the Contemporary label in Los Angeles on the night of November 12 and into the morning of November 13, 1956. This session transcended the conventions of studio production by moving steadily from one tune to the next like a live gig with no alternate takes. Here is West Coast bop at its most spontaneous and exciting. Prior to this highly successful quartet experiment, Hawes had recorded mainly with his trio. He said that the addition of guitarist Jim Hall opened up more rhythmic possibilities. Two veteran avant-gardists get together for a deceptively casual session and wind up with a contemporary jazz masterpiece--one reason being that Gil Evans and Steve Lacy were shrewd enough to choose superior tunes by Mingus (four pieces!) and Duke ("Paris Blues") instead of relying on a few perfunctory heads to noodle away on. Also, the special timbral blend of electric piano and soprano sax (Lacy is still the greatest player since Bechet) lends the sound a hip modern sheen, striking even in 1987. PARIS BLUES is just more proof, if any was needed, that these two cats just never stopped growing.
