Personnel: Paul Davis (guitar); Judith Beck (vocals). Ulrich Schnauss' second record for City Centre Offices moves away from the early-'90s U.K. techno touches of Far Away Trains Passing By in order to zero in on another early-'90s U.K. phenomenon. Though it was plain to hear in the debut that Schnauss had an affinity for the likes of Chapterhouse and Slowdive, it didn't become the crux of his sound until his version of the latter's "Crazy for You," from Morr Music's 2002 Blue Skied an' Clear compilation. Schnauss' version of the song was so dead-on that it could've been released -- without any suspicion -- as a Chapterhouse remix of the original. Though it's just as reliant on the past, A Strangely Isolated Place is an even stronger record than the debut, with a wider range of moods, improved beat programming, unobtrusive vocals, and an overall effect that is less inhibited. "On My Own" could've been the most blissed-out and forward-looking song released on Too Pure in 1992, with a steady Neu!-like rhythmic thrust and sun-bleached guitars shooting equal amounts of blurry rays and fuzzy shards. "Clear Day" is another track that could double as a Chapterhouse remix of Slowdive, only with an outtake from the first singles sped up significantly and bolstered with an energetic hip-hop beat that comes close to being lost in a dense swirl of effects. Admittedly, Schnauss might still be a little too sweet and amiable for most "serious" electronic music followers. That's clearly their loss. ~ Andy Kellman This sophomore release from Ulrich Schnauss displays the German producer/composer's ability to create ambient tapestries, replete with shimmering keyboard effects and lush chordal variety. But what makes this release unique is Schnauss's penchant for warm melodies and pop-influenced refrains. Here Schnauss forges his own voice, blending together the imagistic vistas of Brian Eno with pop structures and experimental techno grooves. The title track features a scintillating Theremin melody singing high above the keyboard accompaniment, while "Clear Day" is a paean to the UK ensemble My Bloody Valentine in its use of metallic textures and other quirky sound effects. The opening track, "Gone Forever," draws the listener in with pastoral keyboard arpeggios and a haunting female vocal. This music washes over the listener, and marks Schnauss as one of the more intriguing ambient artists to watch.

Strangely Isolated Place
$14.15 Leprechaun Water was conceived one beery night by three family members listening to Irish folk music after a recent trip to Ireland. Ex Death Metal lead guitarist Paddy Wakeham, spontaneously decided to purchase a fiddle.............Much ale was later consumed as he taught himself to play it, after some time two other family members joined, Jamie Wakeham (his brother) on Guitar and Viv Wakeham (their Dad), born in Wexford Ireland, on Bodhran and other percussion. After countless hours of practice, creating and remembering our set list we started to play to live audiences with great success, and we have recently been joined by Sean Bay on fiddle. After more practice, more giging and more ale, now two years on, here is our first Professionally recorded CD EP. "Traditional Irish Jigs And Reels", the music of old Ireland, released by ourselves, we hope you will enjoy it as much as we did making it. The Golden Lion, St Ives. LEPRECHAUN WATER The Golden Lion was fairly busy when we arrived at half eight on Sunday evening. The smoking ban now in full force...I was a little concerned as to whether it would affect the turnout, but all seemed to be well (possibly helped by the smoking area/beer garden!) By the time the Leprechaun Water band members started to arrive, the bar was reasonably full. They kicked off with their first set at just after nine, with Viv (the "goatskin whacker") on Bodhran, Jay on Guitar, Paddy on Fiddle and stand in for Sean on the night, Will on Mandolin. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and authenticity of the music. By the time they were a couple of tracks in and the ales were flowing, it felt very comfortable, and my local took on the air of a public house in the depths of Southern Ireland. With a lovely warm and natural feeling, the band played entirely acoustically for the duration of the first set. As things started to busy later in the evening, they set up a single amplifier and microphone, which helped enormously due to the amount of bodies in the room! Thoroughly entertaining second and third sets involved some changes in instrumentation, and a great vocal ...
