"Folk funk" is what Bobby Rush has been calling his brand of Southern-fried blues and soul for several years, and now it's the title for the second release on his own Deep Rush label, and guess what, folks, it is quite likely the best album he's ever done. Joined by Alvin Youngblood Hart on guitar and Charlie Jenkins on drums, with Rush handling nigh everything else, the sound for Folkfunk is stripped down to a basic rhythmic force, and freed from the synthesized keyboards that often marred his earlier releases, it makes a sparse and powerful statement, a bit like John Lee Hooker working with a solid funk trio. Rumour has it that the whole album was recorded in one five-hour session, which may account for its unified tone. Among the high points are a thumping "Uncle Esau," a wonderful version of Percy Mayfield's "River's Invitation," and a revisit to Rush's classic "Chicken Heads," here called "Chicken Heads -Refried." On "Saints Gotta Move" Rush grafts "When the Saints Go Marching In" to "You Gotta Move" in a rousing synthesis. By stripping away any excess instrumentation, Folkfunk allows Rush's truly excessive (and frequently bawdy) persona to shine through in all its glory, making this easily one of his best outings. ~ Steve Leggett

Dirty Linen (p.65) - "[H]is strong vocals and greasy harp are intact and should attract a broader blues audience." Living Blues (p.40) - "[A]n unadulterated blast of another side of the Funk Folklorist, and it's as immediate, contemporary and real as anything else in his repertoire." Folk Funk
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the ...

$8.89 There's a very weird thing about thrash metal -- when it gets to a certain velocity and technical prowess, the guitars no longer sound like guitars, they sound like processed metallic machines. Which, of course, is part of the point, but it will often be slightly strange to listeners, ...
