The Rutabega/Owen Split EP: Near and Far, Vol. 1 is a sweet indie affair throughout, with emo leanings. Rutabega kick off the first half with delicate, acoustic arrangements and an eerie production, much like Iron & Wine or the low-key elements of Built to Spill. With a track like "Fluorescent Funeral," Rutabega set up song structures that fall back on each other in a circle, but do not become boring due to the pop twinklings that release the repetition. The Owen section of the EP continues with sensitive acoustic strumming. These dramatic songs about relationships are very emotional and sweet -- the type of tracks that could make indie girls swoon over this darling. The pedal steel work on "Poor Souls" adds an emotional depth that would not be there with guitar alone. "May First Brings Lots of Laughs" brings waves of melancholy in its delivery and instrumentation, adding an open-ended finish to this short, decent EP. ~ David Serra

Personnel: Omar Arizpe (trombone); Pat O'Hara (double bass); Matt Morgan (percussion).

By the early '80s, the Rolling Stones were one of the last remaining groups leftover from the original "British Invasion" two decades prior. One of the main reasons for this was the Stones' ability to keep pace with the musical climate of the time, without losing any of their original blues-sleaze. Their 1982 live set (fourth overall) STILL LIFE, was taken from performances from their hugely successful U.S. tour a year before, when Mick, Keith and company headlined the biggest outdoor ...

Pricipally recorded live at The Roxy, Hollywood, California from December 10-12, 1973; the Auditorium Theater, Chicago, Illinois in 1974; Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1974. It's no secret that one of the most powerful weapons in Zappa's arsenal was his sense of humor, which was at its height in live performance. Consequently, there's no better way to get a feel for the full scope of Zappa's music than on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE. This set finds Frank at his mid-'70s peak, working with Ruth Underwood, Don Preston, George Duke, etc. While all the tunes are technically impeccable (often featuring trademark feats of counter-intuitive derring-do), it's Zappa's humorous interaction with the band and the audience that puts the real spark into this recording. Delivering lengthy monologues both inbetween and during the songs, Zappa provides light-hearted contrast to the mulit-textured, typically sophisticated arrangements. For every "Son of Orange County" (an ambitious, difficult ...

Recorded between 1970 & 1986. Includes liner notes by Brad Elliott. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Andrew Sandoval & RonMcMaster (December 1999, Capitol Mastering). In the annals of pop, the Beach Boys will always be best known for two things: their early surf-music phase, and the proto-psychedelic orchestral pop of the PET SOUNDS/SMILE period, after which mastermind Brian Wilson began to retreat into a strange, private world, removing himself ever further from the group. But the recordings the Beach Boys made in the '70s for their own Brother label are full of underappreciated gems that have seen more time out of print than in. Thus, this compilation of Brother recordings--mostly from the '70s--is invaluable to those wanting to know the band's full story. The most affecting material comes from 1970's SUNFLOWER and 1971's SURF'S UP, albums beloved to hardcore fans but unknown to most other people. The fugue-like, harmony-laden ...

Historically, the independent labels that have made a difference and developed passionately loyal followings were the ones that carved out a real identity for themselves. Whether their main focus was jazz (Blue Note, Impulse!, CTI, Prestige, Contemporary), soul (Stax, Motown, Hot Wax/Invictus), Chicago blues (Chess), salsa (Fania), dance-pop (Salsoul, TSR), or industrial (Wax Trax), the indie labels (or at least independent in the beginning) that had an impact were the ones that projected a vision, an identity, and a sense of purpose. And if their 2003 and 2004 releases are any indication, the independent Kriztal Entertainment certainly isn't suffering from an identity crisis. Kriztal's specialty is a kinder, gentler approach ...
