The Great Snowman 1959-1963 is the first international release from Canetoad Records, Australia's premier oldies label. The generous 34-track anthology compiles most, if not all, of the recordings Bob Luman made for Warner Bros. in his early days as a rocker. His earliest rock recordings, for the Imperial and Capitol labels, are not included. The last track on the collection, "I Like Your Kind of Love," is a duet with Sue Thompson made for the Hickory label in 1963. Luman's rock & roll is like that of Billy "Crash" Craddock or Johnny Burnette, obviously influenced by Elvis Presley but not entirely derivative. Luman expressed great admiration for Johnny Cash and the imitative "My Baby Walks All Over Me" foreshadows the tributes to Cash he would record in the '70s. Luman went on to greater fame as a country singer, and The Great Snowman traces his evolution as the frequency of country cover songs increases and the character of his music drifts toward a Don Gibson-style rock-inflected country sound. Luman's only major hit from this period, "Let's Think About Living," is included, along with a wealth of obscurities. The Great Snowman 1959-1963 is not about compiling hits -- it pays tribute to Luman's reputation among collectors and their enduring interest in his rock & roll. ~ Greg Adams

This Nashville based country rocker had some great songs and many are here on this CD. Mostly known in the rock world for songs such as 'Let's think about livin', his renditions are pure southern rockabilly. Australian only release!

New England's Blades of Grass were every bit as good as any of the other so-called sunshine pop groups that surfaced in the psychedelic summer of 1967, and if it weren't for a run of just plain blind bad luck, might have had a chance for bigger and better things. As it was, they managed just one album and a handful of singles before calling it quits. The group's biggest success was a version of "Happy," which charted well on the east coast, but unfortunately had to compete with the Sunshine Company's rendition, which stole most of the airplay in the rest of the country. Amazingly, Blades of Grass turned around and subsequently repeated the same scenario with "I Love You Alice B. Toklas," competing with the version by Harpers Bizarre, leading ...

Another year, another Take Action! compilation. The fight against suicide will, unfortunately, never be over, so it's at least nice to see charitable people like those at Hopeless and Sub City consistently doing their part to raise awareness on the subject and provide resources for those in need. To do so, they've rounded up another diverse collection of songs spanning punk, emo and indie rock in the early 21st century, drawing listeners in with tracks from old favorites alongside the ripe opportunity to discover new loves. A PSA from the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus opens Vol. 6's first disc (Rise Against handles disc two's intro). The music then launches forth with My Chemical Romance's dramatic "This Is How I Disappear," followed with strong showings by Senses Fail ("Calling All Cars"), Paramore (the sweetly urgent "Emergency") and the sisterly, slightly haunting pop/rock of Meg & Dia's "Monster." Even All Time Low's quintessential pop-punk ("Coffee Shop Soundtrack") is a good time. The disc's early melody eventually drops into much heavier terrain, ending with cuts from metal and hardcore acts like Drop Dead, Gorgeous, In Flames, Into Eternity, and Misery Signals. The stronger of the two discs, the second offers up excellent tracks from relative punk veterans like Rise Against, the Casualties, and Anti-Flag, and it's actually kind of funny, the placement of No Trigger's "Bust Tropical" right before Strike Anywhere's heartfelt "Instinct," because for second, you'd swear they were the same band. The Falcon and Heavens carry the flag for well-done side projects (of the Lawrence Arms/Alkaline Trio and Alkaline Trio, respectively). Indie pop shines with songs by the Hush Sound ("Wine Red"), Lakes ("Indian Lover") and Copeland ("Control Freak"), while Damiera lends the vaguely ...
