Mundo Verde Esperanca Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars)  A Unique Genius
Hermeto Pascoal is one of the world's greatest living musicians and composers and this CD demonstrates this yet again. His music is always joyful, intriguing, complex, melodic, playful, baffling and full of the sound of surprise. Although Brazilian, this music is a collection of bossas, or sambas - though it does contain those influences. The music is among the most original music in existence and is impossible to describe in words except to say that Hermeto's music is how music should always be and so rarely is - life affirming. Outside of Brazil Hermeto's music is hard to obtain, but it's worth the effort, and this new CD, 'Mundo Verde Esperanca', is among the best I've heard. If you're interested in creative, brilliant music this is for you.

David Rabe's 1984 play HURLYBURLY made it to the big screen in 1998, with some well-measured performances from a cast littered with big names from the Hollywood A-list. Ostensibly Anthony Drazan's film is a riff on the empty-headedness and misogyny that runs rife throughout the Hollywood studio system. But delve beneath the depths of these surly, obstinate characters, and a cheerless, misanthropic tract on the transient nature of friendship is made manifest in this unrelenting portrait of the depths to which human beings can sink.

Chris Potter's new Live at the Village Vanguard album starts jarringly enough. There is a particular knotty, unaccompanied solo saxophone intro to drummer Bill Stewart's "7.5" played via tape delay by Potter on seemingly three saxophones. He is joined by a series of freaky tones on Kevin Hays' Fender Rhodes playing what sounds like the keys on a telephone keypad to truly disorienting effect. Soon enough, however, the ensemble kicks in to fill out the rhythm, Hays switches to piano, and Potter brings the tune's melodic body into focus, swinging half-in-half-out, tightrope walking around a series of scalar figures that translate it into a wonderfully energetic ride. And this is merely the statement of purpose for the entire gig.
