Bernardo Bertolucci's THE DREAMERS centers on three university students who adore the Cinematheque Francaise, and are fascinated by '60s culture--the music of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, the films of Jean-Luc Godard, and the writings of Susan Sontag and Chairman Mao. Their philosophical conversations about sexuality, love, politics, activism, and the Vietnam War; and their daily activities--going to the cinema, protesting in support of Henri Langlois, lounging around naked, and smoking dope--are a realistic reflection of the mood and energy of that era.
The plot involves Parisians Theo (Louis Garrel) and Isa (Eva Green), a brother-sister team with a strangely intimate connection. They befriend their American classmate Matthew (Michael Pitt), and invite him to stay at their apartment for a month while their parents are on vacation. The trio is so engrossed by their film studies that they act out scenes in an ongoing game of trivia, referencing classics like Sam Fuller's SHOCK CORRIDOR, Godard's BANDE A PART, and Frank Tashlin's THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT. They challenge each other through mind games, deeply personal discussions, and sexual dares. Outside their sheltered apartment, the streets are teaming with violence leading up to the May 1968 Paris uprising. Nouvelle Vague icon Bertolucci weaves clips from classic films into this artful and entertaining movie, while a hard-rock '60s soundtrack adds a palpable edginess. Theatrical Release Date: February 6, 2004 (LIMITED)
At its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, THE DREAMERS' subject matter and frankness caused quite a stir. Many believed the film would be censored for American distribution. Instead the studio agreed to release the film with an MPAA rating of NC-17.
Although based on a novel by Gilbert Adair, THE DREAMERS is said to closely emulate Bernardo Bertolucci's experiences in Paris during the 1960s. He has said that it is the period during which he discovered sex, politics and cinema.
Novelist Gilbert Adair also penned the similarly themed LOVE AND DEATH ON LONG ISLAND and THE HOLY INNOCENTS. Dreamers Reviews: "Bertolucci provokes audiences instead of pacifying them. Boy, do we need him now."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "THE DREAMERS looks wonderful. The superb Parisian flat is photographed in fluid takes with exquisite lighting. The soundtrack is a pleasurable 1960s pot-pourri."
-- Ginette Vincendeau, Sight and Sound "[D]isarmingly sweet and completely enchanting..."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "THE DREAMERS does have its pleasures."-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times "The soundtrack is fabulous....The film clips are equally great."-- Mike Clark, USA Today "Some of the moments are inspired..."-- Annlee Ellingson, Box Office "[T]his picture strikes the perfect balance between rosy fantasy and the creeping dark reality of adulthood."

Dreamers Movie Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) artistically beautiful Not for everyone due to its explicit nature, the film is nevertheless a work of great integrity, by a master director; confronting and challenging, with supeb photography, the young performers bravely assume their characters, honestly and effectively, especially Michael Pitt. $16.29 A man wakes in mid-afternoon in a grungy London apartment. A woman knocks at the door. He lets her in, to an awkward silence. She touches his face tenderly--almost immediately they have stripped and are making love on a mattress on the floor. It is the first of many intense, real-time, sexually explicit encounters between Jay (Mark Rylance) and Claire (Kerry Fox). And director Patrice Chéreau reinforces the intensity by keeping his wide-screen camera very close to the actors.
Jay and Claire agree to separate their meetings from the rest of their lives. But after one encounter, Jay follows Claire. He discovers that she acts in a basement theater, and is married to a taxi driver, Andy (Timothy Spall). Following her again, Jay loses her. And, in a reversal of roles--like that in Christopher Nolan's FOLLOWING--when she reemerges from a shop, she follows him. She is amused at first, but is disturbed when he goes to ...

$6.55 In Francois Ozon's SWIMMING POOL, Charlotte Rampling plays Sarah Morton, a prim and proper British author who has written a successful series of mystery-crime novels. However, when she visits her London publisher (Charles Dance) in a dour mood, wearing a depressive pout, and complains that she's no longer his favorite, he invites her to use his vacation home in the south of France as a tranquil escape to try her hand at writing something different. Once there, Sarah receives an unexpected and highly unwelcome visit from his bold, sexy, confrontational teenage daughter Julie (Ludivine Sagnier). The two are instantly at odds with each other, as Julie drinks, smokes, and slinks around the pool topless. Her loose sexual mores and mysterious late nights infuriate Sarah, whose puritanical unease is only exacerbated in Julie's presence. Wonderful scenes of Sarah writing at her computer, her lips twitching wickedly with twisted inspiration, indicate that the story is about to take a turn for the weird. And that it does, quickly, as booze-clouded activities by the swimming pool become dark ...

$16.89 From his current post in Antarctica, British glaciologist Matt (Kieran O'Brien), recalls how he met Lisa (Margo Stilley), a 21-year-old American student. They were at a rock concert at London's Brixton Academy, and he took her back to his apartment for sex. This began a brief relationship, which is revealed as Matt remembers and comments on its milestones--mainly the other concerts they attended and their significant sexual experiences--before their initial sexual attraction waned and they were forced to part.
The titular nine songs are comprised of concert performances by 1) Primal Scream, 2) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, 3) Elbow, 4) Michael Nyman, 5) Super Furry Animals, 6) The Dandy Warhols, 7) Von Bondies, 8) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club again, and 9) Franz Ferdinand. Shot on often-blurry, handheld digital video from an audience perspective, these scenes have a you-are-there effect. The sequences involving Matt and Lisa are intimate and realistic (be warned--the sex in the film is real and graphic), conveying everything one needs to know about their relationship with only the most rudimentary dialogue. With this brief, dreamlike work, director Michael Winterbottom (24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE) has theoretically created the ultimate music movie--one that is purely sex, drugs, and rock & roll. The result is akin to the feeling of listening to a great mix tape made by a former lover.

$10.39 Durable horror conventions are combined with an unusual shooting style in EVIL REMAINS (aka TRESPASSING). Director James Merendino is best known for his film SLC PUNK, but also made a film according to the strict standards of Denmark's Dogma group. He brings that sensibility and willingness to experiment to the slasher film genre with EVIL REMAINS. Mark is a graduate student writing his thesis on urban legends. He convinces his friends to accompany him on an investigation of a backwoods plantation where a pair of murders took place years before. But as the group ...
