Standard Screen; Soundtrack English In New England, four old men entertain each other by telling ghost stories. But these men are tormented by their own horrendous real-life tale, involving a crime they committed against a young lady during their youth -- an act they've hidden for the past 50 years. But this secret comes back to haunt them, as the evil spirit of the woman avenges the crime committed against her. Four elderly men who gather once a week to thrill each other with tales of terror find one of their scariest stories coming to life, as a woman they mistakenly left for dead fifty years earlier returns to life to gain revenge. Featuring stellar talent, including Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and John Houseman as the main characters, this superior, chilling horror film takes its story from a novel by Peter Straub. Fred Astaire's final film. He died in 1987.
Also Melvyn Douglas' final film. Ghost Story Reviews: "...On the credit side is the opportunity to see [Astaire, Douglas, Fairbanks and Houseman] playing four old New England codgers..."

Ghost Story Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) An eerie-creepy story!! The first time I watched this "classic," was when it was first released at the box office in 1981. It has been my all time favorite horror film since it's release. "Dance with me you little toad." They don't make'em like this one anymore!! A Masterpiece of Spooky Storytelling I saw this film when it was first released two decades ago and it still brings on the shivers more successfully than any picture I've ever seen since. Submitted by jstich (Houston, Tx.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Magnificent Piece The movie, while not as cleverly produced as was the novel by Peter Straub, gave the viewer the "classic" ghost story brought to life. Four elderly gentlemen, bound together by a shared history, friendship, and a sense of foreboding, frequently gather together to tell ghost stories. Each of the men is compelled to never forget, but never to speak of, the ultimate horror from their own past. Finally, this horror returns to seek vengeance against them. Not only is the story itself a classic, but we are given fine performances by four members of Old Hollywood royalty. This is a great movie to watch on a cold winter night. $9.69 Based on both the short story by John W. Campbell, Jr. and the 1951 film produced by Howard Hawks, THE THING is John Carpenter's stunning masterpiece of horror. A group of weary scientists enduring the winter in an isolated camp deep in Antarctica chance upon an alien spacecraft buried in the ice. Near the strange craft is the body of an alien being, frozen solid. Thinking they have made the find of a lifetime, the scientists bring the alien body back to camp and thaw it out. The alien awakens, not in the best of moods, and proceeds to take over the identities of the scientists, one by one, body and all. Helicopter pilot MacCready (Kurt Russell) must lead the surviving men in discovering who among them is human and who is not and how they can destroy "the thing" before it takes them all and moves on to the heavily populated mainland and the rest of humanity. Rob Bottin supplies the awe-inspiring special effects of the creature in its many, ever-changing forms. The effects were groundbreaking at the time and hold up flawlessly over the passing years. ...
