Throbbing drums, wailing chants, and ominous strings herald the onset of TROY, James Horner's sweepingly atmospheric score to Wolfgang Petersen's Homer-based epic. Horner excels at evoking celluloid in sound, be it folksy sentiments in the baseball fantasy FIELD OF DREAMS or all-consuming shipboard romance and tragedy in the period nautical-disaster movie TITANIC.
Here he skillfully sets the scene with the heraldic opening salvo of "3200 Years Ago," followed by the shining city splendor of "Troy." Horner is also a master of the tense musical preamble, as evidenced by the brooding arrangement of "The Night Before," which foreshadows tragedy in "The Greek Army and Its Defeat." There's some relief from the unremitting tension in the romantic "Briseis and Achilles," but since this is a Greek myth, the tale shifts the proceedings back to the battle for Troy, to the sound of much lamentation and full orchestral accompaniment.

| Troy Soundtrack Music Review Average Rating: (3.6 out of 5 stars) Great Album It is from my best albums Submitted by h.s.91 (Beirut) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 3 of 5 found this helpful.
Better in the CD, than in the movie!!! The Original Score was composed by Gabriel Yared, but rejected 3 weeks after the film premiere. So James Horner composed the score in two weeks. Entertaining piece of music, the cd is a good example of the best and the worst of this composer. Exciting moments of action music and sometimes "leitmotivs" listened in Horner´s career for two thousand times. Well, the music sounds better in the Cd that in the movie Submitted by germanizida2 (Barcelona (Spain)) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 4 found this helpful.
repeated themes become bothersome James Horner has officially shocked me. This score felt like a bad, cheesy, six-season soap. The over repeated themes got annoying after some time, and I just couldn't get over the fact that it was James Horner who did this. With phenominal scores under his belt such as Braveheart and Titanic, it is a mystery how he loaded this up with too much repitition. The only light that shines in this score is the last track, sung by Josh Groban. He has a gorgeous voice, and never fails to make me pretty happy. Unfortunatly, I thought the same of James Horner. Hopefully, this was just a fluke, because he is an extremely talented man, for whom I have nothing but respect. But it was a little hard to overlook this. Loved it This is one of the most spectacular orchestrations imaginable. It accurately represents to feel of steel, the flash of bronze, the dash of bodies down those sandy hills to the beach or up those walls. The songs of the eastern European women are typical of scenes when the war dead are being cleared away. Hey, it's not a joyful occasion. I think there are many features about this movie and its presentation that are European in flavor and difficult for some Americans to get a handle on.
I liked the music so much I bought the soundtrack I can't remember ever having done that since a hundred years ago for "Somewhere in Time".
It's like an opera, each character has his own theme. The music as the Greeks (Achaeans) move toward the walls of Troy for the first time is dissonant and unresolved, like ... hey ... war itself.
Th love music for Briseis and Achilles is really beautiful. I love this album and recommend it highly for careful listening as to how the themes match the epic actions.
