The sophomore effort by this stellar trio strikes a nice balance between the discursiveness of its debut and the concision of its follow-up. The material is first-rate, with each member contributing a piece; the other compositions are choice cuts by Andrew Hill, Bobby Bradford, John Carter, and the lesser-known Adegoke Steve Colson. With the quality of the material so consistently high, it is difficult to pick a standout track, but Reggie Workman's epic "Suite Tristan" could be a candidate, as it encompasses all the qualities displayed throughout the recording. Bookended by Oliver Lake's flute excursions, the composition develops organically before reaching a plateau and shaping a beautiful melody, which gives Lake the opportunity to twirl around. It also showcases the bassist's majestic sound and his ability to either play as a walking bass or contribute ideas. The overall experience is enhanced by Andrew Cyrille's performance, which, however, does not take anything away from his partners. Cyrille's light but assured touch is a real treat. His brush work is outstanding and he constantly unearths treasures of rhythmic invention using all the possibilities offered by his drum kit. This recording is one of the best testimonies to Cyrille's art as well as a major statement by three great and inspired musicians at the peak of their powers. ~ Alain Drouot

Partially due to the increased rate of cultural dissemination in the information age, Jeff Buckley's posthumous releases nearly caught up with those of his '60s-icon father Tim by the beginning of the 21st century. The elder Buckley had more time to grow stylistically, lending his various posthumous live albums a diversity and air of discovery Jeff's concert recordings never had a shot at. Nevertheless, every Jeff Buckley concert was an event, and his muse was so mercurial that no two of his performances were remotely alike. Thus, amid staples from GRACE such as the fragile Leonard Cohen ballad "Hallelujah" and the raga-rock "Dream Brother," there are some surprises. The previously unheard "That's All I Ask" has a loose, wandering feel that makes it seem spontaneously created. The brief lampoon of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" does not obscure Buckley's obvious debt to that band (and that song).
A turbo-charged "Eternal Life" echoes Buckley's love of the MC5, more explicitly evidenced by the following song, an unfettered cover of that group's classic "Kick out the Jams." The French audience is so taken with Buckley's swooning rendition of the Edith Piaf ballad "Je N'en Connais Pas La Fin" that he interrupts himself mid-croon to clown around with them. I started to play the clarinet when I was 12. I received my early formal music education in a conservatory and in junior high school in my hometown of Tel-Aviv. At about age 16, when I decided to pursue a major in Jazz at the 'Thelma Yelin' High School For The Arts, I was instructed to 'bring your brother's saxophone or!any horn... but NOT the clarinet'. For the next 15 years I played mainly tenor saxophone and only brought out my clarinet occasionally. While attending Berklee College of Music in 1996, I met Phil Wilson, a great musician and educator. He encouraged me to play the clarinet because he felt I had my own 'voice' on the instrument. After moving to NYC in 1999, I started to play different styles of music in which the clarinet is part of their tradition: Brazilian Choro, Dixieland, Colombian and Venezuelan folk music, among others. For the last seven years, I have played saxophones less and the clarinet more. I am feeling the connection with the instrument I established as a child and enjoying it more than ever. I decided to make an album to share some of what I have learned about playing the clarinet in various musical contexts. The songs I have chosen are songs I have loved for years.
