Kids Sing Bluegrass Gospel album
$9.99 Kristin Chenoweth's 2001 album was a collection of standards that showcased her winning soprano and remarkable ability to shift from Broadway brassy to "My Funny Valentine"-sultry at the turn of a note. Let Yourself Go was a great follow-up to her 1999 Tony win for You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. But since then Chenoweth has branched out from Broadway, particularly into acting (She joined the cast of West Wing in 2004), and As I Am reflects her higher profile. It's a personal album that mixes country and adult contemporary instrumentation in a set featuring hymnal book standards and contemporary Christian favorites. Chenoweth herself is pictured in relaxed cotton separates -- every bit the attractive, approachable celebrity -- and there isn't a Broadway tune in the bunch. As I Am begins with "It Will Be Me." A pedal steel helps the 1999 Faith Hill tune retain its country-pop feel, but there's also ...
| | Get Down Tonight: The Disco Explosion CDs (2004) Digipak
Kids Sing Bluegrass Gospel CD music
$41.09 The three-disc box set Get Down Tonight: The Disco Explosion was released just after PBS premiered the program of the same name, which featured new performances -- from Anita Ward, Thelma Houston, A Taste of Honey, KC & the Sunshine Band, and several others -- with archival footage from the disco era. Content-wise, the box doesn't do much to separate itself from the average disco compilation series, leaning heavily on mainstream hits. Each of these 58 songs reached the pop chart, remarkable for a movement with most of its roots planted in clubs that were only a little like Studio 54, populated by marginalized blacks, Latinos, and gays -- a subculture avoided or barely acknowledged by many Saturday Night Fever fans. (The difference is also in the stark contrast between excluded people who were inclusive and included people who were exclusive.) Most of ...

| | Richard Smallwood Persuaded: Live In D.C. CD (2001)
Kids Sing Bluegrass Gospel CD music
$9.09 Recorded live at Jericho City Of Praise, Washington, D.C. on April 21, 2001.
PERSUADED was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album.
This live album by popular worship leader Richard Smallwood and his Vision choir starts out in a rather unexpected way. The full horn and string sections on hand are employed in an instrumental prelude that's more suggestive of European classical music than of down-home gospel. When Vision enters on "Anthem of Praise," their choral vocals sound more like a British early music ensemble ...
| | Ethiopians Reggae Hit The Town CD (2001)
Kids Sing Bluegrass Gospel music CDs
$9.29 A bumper collection of some of the Ethiopians' finest work, and for once the title is barely misleading. Bar the first two tracks, which pre-date the genre's arrival, Reggae Hit the Town is drawn exclusively from that hit-filled era. A succinct career summary helps to put things in perspective, and best of all, the tracks are sequenced in chronological order, allowing listeners to chart the group's progress for themselves. What's missing are release dates and, worse yet, production credits. As the selector obviously worked hard on this fine overview, without playing producer favorites, this is a particular pity. So for the record, there's Coxsone Dodd's stellar "Owe Me No Pay Me," which heralded the shift from ska to rocksteady, Sonia Pottinger's pure rocksteady smash "Cool It Amigo," a clutch of classics from ...

| | Sullivan, Carolyn & Dickie Love & The Cold Hard Ground CD (2007)
Kids Sing Bluegrass Gospel CD music
$18.99 Some couples raise a family. Some couples raise sheep. Others flip houses. Carolyn and Dickie Sullivan write songs. Dickie has studied music and songwriting since the early 70s. Carolyn has been writing songs for over thirty years, and has performed in the Northeast, the Southeast, England and Romania. Their most recent performance together was in February, 2007 at the Bluebird Café in Nashville, TN.The two met in the early 80s, and barely had time to share their musical tastes and aspirations when Carolyn took off for a two-year stay in Bath, England. Upon her return, Carolyn and Dickie got back together in Boston and began to hone their songwriting skills, and—as will sometimes happen—a relationship developed that went beyond musical collaboration. Eager to develop their craft, the two became involved in hosting a songwriters’ night at Christopher’s (now TOAD) in Cambridge, MA. They became Regional Workshop Coordinators for the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) in 1995. ...
