Kristin Chenoweth's 2001 album was a collection of standards that showcased her winning soprano and remarkable ability to shift from Broadway brassy to "My Funny Valentine"-sultry at the turn of a note. Let Yourself Go was a great follow-up to her 1999 Tony win for You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. The three-disc box set Get Down Tonight: The Disco Explosion was released just after PBS premiered the program of the same name, which featured new performances -- from Anita Ward, Thelma Houston, A Taste of Honey, KC & the Sunshine Band, and several others -- with archival footage from the disco era. A bumper collection of some of the Ethiopians' finest work, and for once the title is barely misleading. Bar the first two tracks, which pre-date the genre's arrival, Reggae Hit the Town is drawn exclusively from that hit-filled era. A succinct career summary helps to put things in perspective, and best of all, the tracks are sequenced in chronological order, allowing listeners to chart the group's progress for themselves. What's missing are release dates and, worse yet, production credits. As the selector obviously worked hard on this fine overview, without playing producer favorites, this is a particular pity. Some couples raise a family. Some couples raise sheep. Others flip houses. Carolyn and Dickie Sullivan write songs. Dickie has studied music and songwriting since the early 70s. Carolyn has been writing songs for over thirty years, and has performed in the Northeast, the Southeast, England and Romania. Their most recent performance together was in February, 2007 at the Bluebird Café in Nashville, TN.The two met in the early 80s, and barely had time to share their musical tastes and aspirations when Carolyn took off for a two-year stay in Bath, England. Upon her return, Carolyn and Dickie got back together in Boston and began to hone their songwriting skills, and—as will sometimes happen—a relationship developed that went beyond musical collaboration. Eager to develop their craft, the two became involved in hosting a songwriters’ night at Christopher’s (now TOAD) in Cambridge, MA.
