While other frontrunners of hard rock/metal like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple began dabbling in other musical forms (folk and string symphonies, respectively), Black Sabbath stuck close to its original direction and was rewarded with several of the most enduring rock releases of all time. Coming off the worldwide breakthrough of the band's 1971's landmark, PARANOID, MASTER OF REALITY (released the same year) proved to be Sabbath's third classic in a row. Like all Sabbath albums of the era, not a second of filler is present--even the lesser-known material is superb.
The album's opening track, "Sweet Leaf," a salute to one of the band's favorite smokeable substances, contains one of metal's heaviest guitar riffs, courtesy of Tony Iommi. Another eternal band favorite is the grim, post-nuclear war tale "Children of the Grave." Vocalist Ozzy Osbourne is in fine voice on "After Forever" and "Lord of this World," while the more tranquil "Solitude" and the instrumental Iommi compositions "Embryo" and "Orchid" offer a bit of variety. Though not quite as influential as PARANOID, MASTER OF REALITY remains one of heavy metal's founding gems.

This cd never sounded any better. The remaster was done very well. Turn it up loud and enjoy every minute of this one. A must have. SOUNDS EXCELLENT !! Thanks cd universe for having access to these great remasters.

 Last Truly Great Sabbath Album
This is the third Sabbath release, and also their final truly great album. You may have heard or read others saying that Vol. 4 or Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was their last classic release, but they peaked early, ImHO. The riffing is relentless, as the guys still sounded hungry and not past their prime...as I feel started on Vol. 4. The lyrics are still a combination of goofy yet creepy, and the Ozz-man is still wailing in that higher register. All tops except for two short below par tracks...but Children of the Grave is an all-time hard rock classic, as is Sweet Leaf. Great, classic hard rock/early metal material...
As for the edition, I picked up the 2004 Sanctuary UK version of the CD, which sounds light years better than my old Warner Brothers US CD. Get this one if you didn't get the Rhino box set remaster.

By the mid-'70s, a number of problems were threatening to break up the original line-up of Black Sabbath. The stress brought on by lengthy touring, drug use, and alcoholism had begun to dilute the band's original, influential heavy metal. Sabbath began to drift away from the straight-ahead power rock of such classic albums as PARANOID and SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH, as evidenced by its final two albums to feature singer Ozzy Osbourne, 1976's TECHNICAL ECSTASY and 1978's NEVER SAY DIE. However, TECHNICAL ECSTASY does contain some intriguing, overlooked tracks.
