Rugged Jungle album
$12.49 BLAME IT ON MY YOUTH features nearly the same band heard on Art Farmer's SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR, his 1987 tribute to Billy Strayhorn. However, the flugelhorn player and his group perform quite differently on this album, which was recorded just one year later. Presumably, this is due, in large part, to the more contemporary repertoire chosen for this session. In fact, for the most part, Farmer's quintet focuses on little-known modern compositions, not standards.
The most experimental of the tracks is the sly "The Smile of the Snake," which purposely falls apart during pianist James Williams's solo. Just when the listener begins to wonder ...
| | Arthur Blythe Lenox Avenue Breakdown CD (1978)
Rugged Jungle CD music
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in swing, post-bop, and romantic styles) with his avant-garde leanings is evident here. "Odessa," for example, a modal exploration, begins melodically, yet pushes further ...

Rugged Jungle CD music
$29.09 "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male; and TEN SUMMONER'S TALES won the 1994 Grammy Award for Engineered Album, Nonclassical. "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" was also nominated for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year; and TEN SUMMONER'S TALES was nominated for Album Of The Year.
Mr. "Sheer Profundity" delivered a stunning fourth solo album that probably surprised himself as well as the critics who were prepared to watch his fall from grace after the seeming failure of the intense THE SOUL CAGES. Right from the opener, "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," the album holds its pace. That track will be seen as a classic in years to come, as will the beautiful "Fields Of Gold" and "Shape Of My Heart." Sting is established as a major artist with a solo career that has now eclipsed his former supergroup.
After two albums of muted, mature jazz-inflected pop, the last being an explicit album about death, Sting created his first unapologetically pop album since the Police with Ten Summoner's Tales. The title, a rather awkward pun on his given last name, is significant, since it emphasizes that this album is a collection of songs, without any musical conceits or lyrical concepts tying it together. And, frankly, that's a bit of a relief after the oppressively somber The Soul Cages and the hushed, though lovely, Nothing Like the Sun. Sting even loosens up enough to crack jokes, both clever (the winking litany of celebrity pains of "Epilogue [Nothing 'Bout Me]") and condescending (the sneeringly catchy cowboy tale "Love Is Stronger Than Justice [The Munificent Seven]"), and the result is his best solo record. In places, it's ...
