(1 Customer Review)
For her second studio album, Bebel Gilberto largely forgoes the electronic tinges of TANTO TIEMPO, in favor of a more straight-ahead bossa nova sound that often evokes the music of her father, the legendary vocalist/guitarist Joao Gilberto. On the breezy opener, "Baby," Gilberto lovingly adopts some of the vocal mannerisms of the song's writer, the renowned Brazilian troubadour Caetano Veloso, while gentle acoustic guitar guides the tune along. The majority of these songs, however, are penned (at least in part) by Gilberto herself. "Simplesmente" casts a dreamy keyboard-laden spell, while "O Caminho" is a melancholy, piano-driven number. Throughout the album, the focus remains on Gilberto's gorgeously smooth voice as she sings in both Portugese and English. BEBEL GILBERTO finds the vocalist easing even more comfortably into her family's musical heritage, and the result is a relaxed, confident set of songs.
Personnel: Bebel Gilberto (vocals); Pascal Gabriel (various instruments, programming); Pedro Baby, Masa Shimizu (acoustic guitar); Paul Levi (flute); Carlinhos Brown (harmonica, piano, vibraphone, bongos); Didi Gutman (piano, keyboards, programming); Marius de Vries (piano, bells, programming); Jorge Helder (bass instrument); Magrus Borges (drums); Mauro Refosco (percussion); Alexis Smith (programming).
Rolling Stone (p.179) - 3 stars out of 5 - "The sublime 'River Song' and 'Baby', an Os Mutantes cover, groove to the spirit of samba, and more down-tempo tracks such as 'Cada Beijo' exude supper-club chill-out." Entertainment Weekly (p.87) - "[A]ll the songs play like a lovely summer breeze." - Grade: A- Q (p.114) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[I]t's probably about as near as most of us will ever get to a sunset stroll along Ipanema. The ideal summer soundtrack." Uncut (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[S]weet and sultry as a languid Copacabana summer afternoon." CMJ (p.5) - "The band's hooks are rounded at the edges and placed in mid-tempo territory, creating something both laid back and quietly innovative." Mojo (Publisher) (p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[A]nother rich balm for the senses, its spare, sunshine-fortified grooves propelled by intoxicating rhythm tracks..." Bebel Gilberto
$13.99 Bebel Gilberto was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist. TANTO TEMPO was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Musica Popular Brasileira Album.
This is a collection of remixes from the TANTO TEMPO album. Remixers include Peter Kruder, Truby Trio, Rae & Christian, King Britt.
Bebel Gilberto is the daughter of Brazilian singer/guitarist Joao Gilberto. TANTO TEMPO, her debut release, brings a contemporary sheen to classic bossa novas. Acoustic accompaniment predominates, with the addition of occasional electronica, making this collection a perfect reflection of the late-20th century two-way street between traditional Brazilian bossa nova and the American producers who covet its easy, sexy sound.
Gilberto's voice is assured and steady. As with other South American singers gaining attention in the States, such as Peru's Susana Baca, she's a model of restrained passion, her phrasing subtly and sensuously caressing her music. Gilberto sings mostly in Portuguese, but performs a few songs in English, such as the dreamy "August Day Song." "Lonely" finds her paired with Washington D.C. downtempo producers Thievery Corporation, while the classic "So Nice" is still the perfect airy, breezy hammock song. TANTO TEMPO is highly recommended for aficionados of both classic and modern Brazilian pop.
Issued the same year as Bebel Gilberto's first full-length solo album TANTO TEMPO, TANTO TEMPO REMIXES is, as the name implies, a series of remixed tracks from that debut. Bebel is the daughter of Joao Gilberto (the man who almost single-handedly popularized bossa nova), and has been singing and performing ...
| | Tesla Into The Now CD (2004)
Bebel Gilberto
$8.49 Unfairly labeled a hair-metal band, Tesla was always closer to the spirit of vintage 1970s hard rock. When the group released 1994's BUST A NUT, grunge rock was in full swing, and the Sacramento quintet subsequently took their curtain call, keeping busy with low-profile side projects. Testing the waters in 2000, Tesla launched a successful reunion tour, proving the band's enduring appeal. INTO THE NOW stands as their first full-length studio effort in 10 years.
The core of Tesla's sound has been updated with a fresh and contemporary flavor, but it's still very much their own. Jeff Keith's voice retains its heartfelt grit and grease, while guitarists Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeotch have noticeably absorbed some nu-metal influences in the band's downtime. Downtuned, post-grunge riffs drive tracks such as "Miles Away," "Mighty Mouse," and the aptly named title track. Still, Tesla are truly in their element when they tap into the vibe that's endeared them to legions of fans, best evidenced in future classics "Caught Up In A Dream" and "What A Shame."

| | Joe Satriani Is There Love In Space? CD (2004)
Bebel Gilberto
$7.59 Throughout his career, Joe Satriani has managed that rare trick of inspiring worship by guitar acolytes everywhere, while still managing a modicum of crossover appeal to music fans less interested in the technical aspects of his work. His ninth album, IS THERE LOVE IN SPACE?, continues down that same path of serving both the instrumental aficionado and the casual fan. Working with bassist Matt Bissonette and drummer Jeff Campitelli, Satriani quickly switches stylistic gears, flip-flopping between an uber-funky, wah-wah riff and his standard high-flying soloing on "The Souls of Distortion" or running through the brash, drop-tuned menace of "Hands in the Air." Satch's also conjures up "I Like the Rain," a Lone Star boogie that combines a sampled motorcycle engine and a fuzz-tone vocal, and sees him coming off like ZZ Top. Likewise, this Long Island native's eccentric musical whims will have Lenny Kravitz fans doing a double take upon hearing the Lenny-like vocals and chugging swagger of "Lifestyle." Satriani even recruits his young son to contribute bowed electric bass on the atmospheric closer "Bamboo."
Recorded at The Plant Studios, Sausalito, California.
Personnel: Joe Satriani (vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboards); Jeff Campitelli (drums, percussion); John Cuniberti ...
| | Madeleine Peyroux Careless Love CD (2004)
Bebel Gilberto
$13.05 Madeleine Peyroux's unique blend of jazz and pop was first unveiled on 1996's DREAMLAND, where she sounded like a postmodern heir to the smoky-voiced tradition that ran down from Billie Holiday through the likes of Karen Dalton and Judy Roderick. Though Peyroux made a splash with her debut, she quickly dropped out of the music scene, not to appear again until eight years later with the long-overdue follow-up, CARELESS LOVE.
Here, Peyroux tackles material from a variety of sources; some songs were written expressly for her by such contemporary songsmiths as Jesse Harris (who penned Norah Jones's breakthrough hit, "Don't Know Why"). Perhaps most striking, though, are her interpretations of older compositions. Peyroux redefines the darkly yearning Leonard Cohen tune "Dance Me to the End of Love" as a sultry invitation rather than a heart-on-the-sleeve plea. Her lighter-than-air stroll through the clouds of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" has a graceful ease that puts the song's many previous cover versions to shame. Throughout CARELESS LOVE, Peyroux--with highly sympathetic production from Joni Mitchell right-hand-man Larry Klein--proves fully up to the task of redefining the role of torch singer for the careworn 21st century.

| | Bebel Gilberto Momento CD (2007) Digipak
Bebel Gilberto
$12.99 Only Bebel Gilberto's third album in seven years, MOMENTO is an ideal fusion of the bossa nova sound popularized by her father, Joao Gilberto, with cool dancefloor electronica and sweet pop melodies. In contrast to the trance-like, downtempo sound of her debut album, TANTO TEMPO, and the more overtly Brazilian vibe of 2004's BEBEL GILBERTO, MOMENTO balances those two sides of Gilberto's musical personality and adds a previously hidden knack for catchy pop tunes. The overall effect of the chilly electronic beats, mellow acoustic guitars, and Gilberto's warm, inviting vocals (with lyrics in both Portuguese and English) is strongly reminiscent of the British duo Everything But the Girl, especially on Gilberto's overtly bossa nova-inspired take on Cole Porter's "Night and Day," which takes some cues from the duo's extremely similar arrangement of the tune. Another highlight is the pulsing dance-pop of "Bring Back the Love," which has the epic sweep of an early disco hit, thanks to guest stars the Brazilian Girls. Musically wide-ranging and uniformly memorable, MOMENTO is Bebel Gilberto's finest album yet.

| | Marco Pereira Valsas Brasilieras CD (2002) (Import) Import; Brazil
Bebel Gilberto
$23.65 VALSAS BRASILERAS is a 12-track release by Brazilian guitarist Marco Pereira and features "Beatriz," "Eponina," and "Luiza."
This is a splendid solo collection of 12 Brazilian waltzes by guitarist Marco Pereira, the powerhouse player who most recently graced vocalist Luciana Souza's Grammy-nominated Brazilian Duos CD. Here, Pereira again demonstrates that the best gentleness comes from strength: While the overall feel of Valsas Brasilieras is relaxing and tender, his mastery of the instrument and its
harmonic possibilities lifts the music out of the "ear candy" category into something direct and profound. The selections range from classic tunes of old Rio -- "Eponina" and "Manhas de Sol," including the dazzling "Desavairada" or "Insane" by Anibal Augusto Sardinha "Garoto," a father of modern Brazilian guitar -- to works by more contemporary giants like Jobim, Edu Lobo, Chico Buarque, and Vinicius de Moraes, and relative newcomers like Guinga. Pereira also contributes two fine originals, the haunting "Marta" and "Plainte." While the entire selection is superb, the album peaks with the cascading poignancy of "Eu Te Amo," the sheer artistry of"Manhas de Sol," the thoughtful "Emotiva No. 1," and Pereira's intricate, achingly lovely version of what many consider to be Jobim's most ...
| | Jorge Drexler Sea CD (2004)
Bebel Gilberto
$12.79 SEA is a 2004 release by Uruguayan pop isnger Jorge Drexler, featuring "Horas" and "Crece"
Sea is the follow-up to Jorge Drexler's masterpiece Frontera. And although it's not as brilliant as its predecessor, it's certainly a very strong effort. Drexler is not "just" another songwriter in the Spanish tradition. He pays an unusual attention to music, not only words. In this album, loops and electronic sounds are added to his frequent combination of Brazilian, Argentine, and -- of course -- Uruguayan influences, genres, and styles. Although it's a pretty even album, there are some highlights: the beautiful chacarera ...
