| | Mickey Jupp Live At The BBC Soundtrack CD
This collection of four separate 1978 and 1979 BBC sessions does what live BBC collections should: preserve and present evidence of a performer in a somewhat different light than what's heard on the artist's records. It doesn't lean exclusively on the repertoire Mickey Jupp recorded for his initial pair of solo albums in the late 1970s (though there are a few highlights from those records here, like "Switchboard Susan"), and you also hear him playing with four entirely separate groups of musicians. There are Jupp's own versions of songs covered by Dr. Feelgood, those being "Cheque Book," "Down at the Doctors," and "So Long" -- in fact "Cheque Book"'s done twice. There's the only known recording of the Jupp composition "Wrong Food." And, most pleasingly of all, five of the songs from a 1978 session are done acoustically, with Mo Witham the only musician aside from Jupp (though a version of "Cheque Book" attributed to the same session, oddly, features a full band). The sound's a bit thin and coarse, but is well above the standard required for ease of listenability. All those pluses logged, it's still difficult to imagine this having a wide appeal beyond the converted pub rock devotee. It's not cliched blues-rock, but it's somewhat journeyman if accomplished bluesy rock, and Jupp's a better writer than singer. Jupp does sound more engaging and personal when working in the acoustic format of that one session, making it fortunate that this portion in particular was captured for eventual release. ~ Richie Unterberger
This compilation of BBC recordings represents Mickey Jupp at his most active during the late 1970s. Included here is the only known recording of the track "Wrong Food". The boklet includes lengthy liner notes and several rare, previously unpublished photographs.
Personnel: Mickey Jupp Band, The Cable Layers, Mo Witham.
Liner Note Author: John Gardner.

RAGTIME THE MUSICAL was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show.
Ragtime-the musical genre-is one of the principal crossroads amongst African-American rhythms, European-American songs and New World sensibility at the turn of the 20th century. As such, it works as a perfect metaphor for this mega-musical that takes on this whole wild and wooly nation. Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, whose prior collaborations include "Once Upon This Island" and "My Favorite Year," have crafted an ambitious, tumultuous, but upbeat American epic based on the E.L. Doctorow bestseller. Taking their cues from Scott Joplin, Stephen Foster, minstrels, vaudeville and of course their Broadway predecessors, Ahrens and Flaherty effortlessly evoke another time while drawing parallels to another, strangely familiar turn of the century place.

Live At The BBC Soundtrack album
$11.15 You've got to hand it to the Toasters. When the third ska revival hit in the mid-'90s, they had already been on the scene for over a decade, and bandleader Rob Hingley's Moon Ska NYC label was home to some of America's (and Canada's and England's) best ska bands. They took advantage of ska's new wave of popularity by releasing a truckload of albums by young bands, and while some have criticized Moon for a certain lack of discrimination during that period, there was no question that the Toasters' own releases were of the highest quality. With the subsequent collapse of the ska revival and the partial collapse of the record industry, Moon went out of business, and the Toasters went back to doing what they do best: playing top-notch 2-tone-derived modern ska for live audiences. Their first studio album in five years shows blessedly little ...
