Photographer: Ken Schles. Yes, he's a bluesman -- has anyone at all familiar with Johnny Winter ever thought anything else? But his first album of new material in almost eight years was certainly very much in the straightforward blues-rock mold, emphasis on the "blues" over "rock." There was nothing to either disappoint longtime fans or excite the unconverted, as it was about exactly the set you'd expect from Winter, setting energetic if predictably formatted material to solid electric blues arrangements. His accomplished guitar playing sometimes bore a tarter tone than some of his past recordings, and his vocals as always were not as impressive as his axe work, though they were serviceable. The songs were a mixture of originals, contributions from past and present sidemen and producer Tom Hambridge, and covers of Lazy Lester's "Sugar Coated Love" and Hop Wilson's "That Wouldn't Satisfy." Although this is acceptably competent, good-natured blues-rock, it's the acoustic "That Wouldn't Satisfy" that provides the most inspired moments. Winter's slide guitar on this track is superb, whetting one's appetite for an entire album of such outings should he ever be in the mood to go unplugged. ~ Richie Unterberger On guitar-slinger Johnny Winter's 2004 outing, I'M A BLUESMAN, his spicy style of playing keeps with a legacy dating back to the late 1960s, when he was playing on the club circuit of tiny Beaumont, Texas. Tapping Roy Buchanan/Albert Collins producer Dick Shurman to man the console, Winter wisely brings his touring band into the studio with him. Although the albino axe-wielder's guitar tone sounds oddly compressed, his still-impressive playing does much to dispel any distractions. Such is the case when the sixtysomething Texan plays the spurned-lover card, be it on the organ-soaked howler "Cheatin' Blues" or the subtler, but no less suspicious, "I Smell Smoke." Despite nearly being eligible for Social Security, the rail-thin Winter still opens it up, as evidenced by the howling and crackling slide guitar adorning "Lone Wolf" and the equally tempestuous stomper "Sweet Little Baby." Winter also tips his Stetson to Lazy Lester and Hop Wilson with the former's "Sugar Coated Love," served up as a snappy, mid-tempo shuffle, and the latter's "That Wouldn't Satisfy," cast as a mournful, acoustic steel-guitar lament. I smell smoke-says it all Th esong "I smell smoke" shows of just what has kept me interested in Johnny Winter as a guitarist for 30+ years now. This guy has guitar licks that I have admired since the early 70's and continue to drive me to improve my own playing style.
Good choice if you need a different style of "bluesman" Submitted by busoperations (Grantham, NH originally from NYC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
THE KING IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!! Mr. Bluesman has returned with another excellent recording. With songs like That Wouldn't Satisfy, Lone Wolf, Lets Start Over Again & Shakedown the blues just flows perfectly. Also, Johnny's humor is still intact with The Monkey Song. I hope we don't have to wait another six years for another recording from the master of blues guitar. Submitted by gdmeltonjdw (MUNCIE, IN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Johnny's A Real Bluesman It's so great to hear a new album from the legendary Johnny Winter after such a long break. And the wait was definately worth it. Despite his age and ill health, Johnny plays his heart out and with an accoustical bonus this is a great little album. There may well be new pretenders to the throne, but thers only one king, long may Johnny reign. Submitted by dnhay (Plymouth (UK)) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Go ahead, buy it! Johnny Winter is one of my all time favorite electric guitar players. If you don't have his Alligator Records releases, you should buy them before buying this album. However, if you are a big fan of Johnny, go ahead and buy this CD. His voice may be different (some might say weak), but his playing is still as unique as ever. 2 LPs on 1 cassette. Performers include: Bessie Smith, Muddy Waters. Originally released on Columbia (30008). Includes liner notes by Paul Oliver. When writer and blues scholar Paul Oliver first came along, the genre he specialized in was something of a mystery to the music audience. Young listeners hearing the Rolling Stones do an old Delta blues number on the group's very first record usually thought this was some kind of original concept, not a tribute to a great Afro-American art form which at that point had been languishing in obscurity. The growing popularity and staying power that has accompanied the blues into the millennium has of course brought with it enormous amounts of additional research and the release of old and new blues material on what can only be considered a massive scale. The work of Oliver has certainly lost much of what used to make it exclusive. Fans no longer have to turn to his productions or books out of desperation. This double-album set may have been one of the best blues compilations available at one point, but that was only because that particular bin was almost completely empty. With so much other material subsequently available, consumers are free to look at this set with a sneer forming on their lips that may rival that of Mick Jagger. Of course there is nothing wrong with any of the 32 tracks that are included; it is all perfectly good music and some of it is downright brilliant. The rating above, then, is for the music performances. Judged purely as a historical document, ...
