Initial pressings of DEAD CITIES... include a bonus Enhanced CD.
Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau, two young Frenchmen with a penchant for electronic music, released their first album as M83 in 2001. Two years later (three in the US), they upped the ante with DEAD CITIES, RED SEAS & LOST GHOSTS. It's easy to forgive the countless My Bloody Valentine comparisons the duo garners, especially when the ethereal-yet-organic flow of their swirling, sparkling sound pushes the same emotional buttons that LOVELESS did over a dozen years earlier. The main difference between M83 and MBV, however, is that in sharp contrast to Kevin Shields's lush guitar orchestrations, most of M83's sounds are electronically generated. The blissful swoops and shudders that grace every track may sound like forces of nature, but their origins are largely digital. In this respect, one might make just as valid a connection to the mid-'90s ambient folk-pop of Flying Saucer Attack. Reference points aside, DEAD CITIES is a standout recording of its time, whether you stack it among contemporaries in rock, electronica, or any other genre.
M83: Anthony Gonzalez, Nicolas Fromageau.

CMJ (p.6) - "M83 washes in elemental intricacies and subtleties that swirl and collide, creating something both massive and dense." CMJ (p.20) - "Not since Air's earliest recordings has there been an electronic pop record as gorgeous and meaningful." Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts music CDs
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to ...

Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts album
$15.69 AMERICAN LIFE Limited Edition includes a 2 sided 23" x 35" poster and postage size Madonna stamp sheet.
Re-teaming with French electro-pop producer Mirwais, (who also lent his talents to 2000's MUSIC), Madonna uses her perspective as a globally famous ex-pat living in England to comment on the USA's spiritual state throughout AMERICAN LIFE. Prominently featuring plenty of acoustic guitar among the synth-soaked swooshes and Euro-disco beats, the Material Girl ends up going for a more stripped-down sound. This technique works particularly well on the opening title cut, which finds Ms. Ciccone rapping about bodyguards, soy lattes, gardeners and other upper-class perks that don't seem to make the spiritual side of life any better.
"Hollywood" does an even better job addressing the downside of fame while pumping in a few more hooks. Faith in family fuels the lush "Nothing Fails," with its unexpected gospel-chorus outro, while amore inspires the light and tight "Love Profusion," and insecurity plagues the solo-acoustic "X-Static Process." Of course all these songs of self-discovery and spirituality didn't stop Madonna from including "Die Another Day," the Euro-techno title song from the James Bond film of the same name.
American Life is an album performed by a vocalist who has abandoned the U.S. for the U.K. and co-produced by a French techno mastermind, recorded during a time of strife in America, and released just after the country completed a war. Given that context and given that the vocalist is arguably the biggest star in the world, the title can't help but carry some import, carry the weight of social commentary. And it follows through on that promise, sometimes explicitly and sometimes implicitly, but either way, American Life ...
