On All We Need, Antonio Hart takes a breather from his collaborations with the Dave Holland Quintet and offers this excellent recording that features a top-flight ensemble of jazz musicians on ten compositions. Written mainly by Hart and the awesome tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath of the Heath Brothers, the songs are straight-ahead jazz pieces that give plenty of blowing room for all musicians. In addition to Heath on tenor saxophone; Lonnie Plaxico on bass; Billy Kilson and Nasheet Waits on drums; Shedrick Mitchell on piano, Hammond B3, and Rhodes; Michael Philip Mossman on trumpet; Renato Thomas on percussion; and Maya Azucena on vocals, this sterling CD boasts liner notes by Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dave Holland, and Heath. Hart plays both soprano and alto saxophones, as well as flute and synthesizer on this set, and really cuts loose on "Auditory Illusion." His sound is introspective and laid-back on "Crystal." It sends a very mellow message when pianist Shedrick Mitchell adds his sensuous, smooth, urban grooves. Heath contributes "Bruh Slim" and "A Harmonic Future," which feature his swinging tenor bebop solos that harmonize righteously with Hart's great alto saxophonics. As with the opening song, the set closes with a variation of the title track -- both being sung by Maya Azucena. Her voice is soulful and loving on "Love Is All We Need" and gospel-tinged on the closer "God Is All We Need." This is an excellent student/teacher (Hart and Heath) collaboration and one that offers many beautiful, as well as memorable, melodies long after the record ends. ~ Paula Edelstein

| | Chris Potter Lift: Live At The Village Vanguard CD (2004)
All We Need CD music
$13.75 Chris Potter's new Live at the Village Vanguard album starts jarringly enough. There is a particular knotty, unaccompanied solo saxophone intro to drummer Bill Stewart's "7.5" played via tape delay by Potter on seemingly three saxophones. He is joined by a series of freaky tones on Kevin Hays' Fender Rhodes playing what sounds like the keys on a telephone keypad to truly disorienting effect. ...

All We Need songs
$11.79 A BRIGHTER DAY was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
In the early-'90s acid jazz scene, stylish Brits like Brand New Heavies and Ronny Jordan experimented in fusing jazz with elements of funk and hip hop. On his Blue Note debut, Ronny Jordan displays an expanding vocabulary of smooth jazz talk and world beat accents without sacrificing his funky, streetwise slang.

| | Serge Gainsbourg CD (1999) Import
All We Need album
$44.25 Serge Gainbourg's self-titled release features 24 remastered tracks including "La Javanaise" and "Cargo Culte."
It's difficult to rate any collection of Serge Gainsbourg's music as less than classic, since there is scarcely a thing, in all the years he recorded, that is less than stellar, depending on your point of view. Many might feel this double set from Universal deserves a higher -- perhaps even perfect -- grade for its impeccable selection ...

All We Need CD music
$14.95 Originally released in the United States in 1992 and reissued by Australia's AIM label in 2005, Double Trouble finds Roy Ayers doing some collaborating with the late funk/soul icon Rick James (who died in 2004 at the age of 56). By 1992, James was long past his prime, both commercially and creatively -- and sadly, he was receiving more attention for his infamous drug and legal problems than for his musical contributions. But James, for all his demons, was seriously talented -- and this CD offers a ...
