When New Orleans label No Limit first hit the big time in the late 1990s, it was Silkk the Shocker who released the first major album (CHARGE IT 2 DA GAME) on the heels of founder Master P's multi-platinum breakthrough. When the company reemerged in 2004 with a Master P comeback, Silkk the Shocker again followed, this time with his fifth record (and his first in three years), BASED ON A TRUE STORY.
Always a distinctive vocalist, the Southern rapper improved his lyrical acuity by leaps and bounds during the hiatus. Over the span of his first four albums, Silkk reveled in all the usual trappings of gangsta rap, going gleefully over the top, more concerned with starting the party than with thoughtful lyrics. While BASED ON A TRUE STORY's themes stay true to the customary topics of girls, riches, prowess, and more girls (and, as it is on No Limit, basketball), "Why You Mad" and "We Don't Dance We Bounce" are practically introspective, rife with clever turns of phrase. However, that certainly is not to imply Silkk has forgotten how to throw a party, particularly on Petey Pablo-boasting single "We Like Them Girls." With BASED ON A TRUE STORY, Silkk the Shocker rises to new heights of his hip-hop skills.

$8.75 In the late 1990s, Percy Miller built a tremendous empire with his No Limit label, featuring a slew of hardcore rap artists, including himself--the incomparable, growl-voiced Master P. No Limit never really went away, but nevertheless Miller decided to revamp it in 2004, and who better to christen the revival than his own alter ego? Christen it Master P does, in a style ...

$14.09 B.G.'s rapping skills made serious revenue for the legendary Cash Money label before he was a teenager (and before there was much of a Cash Money label of which to speak). Based On A True Story album
$16.65 BGP scoured far and deep for the 20 funk rarities (three previously unissued), spanning the mid-'60s to the late '70s, that comprise this CD. None of these artists made a notable splash as funk or soul artists, although a few -- Pee Wee Crayton, Preston Epps, Johnny Otis, and Joe Houston -- had early R&B/blues/rock hits in the 1950s and are represented by obscure and highly atypical ventures into funk. Given how many rarity compilations in all genres aren't as musically exciting as they are rare, it's a nice surprise to find much excellence on this anthology, which can be heartily dug by most rock listeners, not just funk devotees. If nothing else, it's a testament to just how wide and serious James Brown's influence was during this period. Billy Garner's "Brand New Girl," Granby Street Development's "Jelly Roll" (with the incredibly lewd female spoken interjection "that cat looks so good to me/he can have his jelly roll free!"), and Jackie Harris' "Do It, Do It" all kick up a funk fuss, much like what Brown and the J.B.'s did during their prime, and Freddy Wilson's "Promised Land" is one of the most accurate vocal imitations of Brown you'll find. Still, the grooves are so intense and compelling that ...
