Baby Grande is undoubtedly the quickest moving indie hip-hop label of 2004, dropping records by everyone from Golden Era classics Brand Nubian to underground femme fatale Jean Grae and frontline political assassin Immortal Technique, all in less than 12 months. Along with less standout releases like Sharkey's Machine and -ready 7L & Esoteric and Outerspace mentors Jedi Mind Tricks, this release seems to have simply been swept up in the movement of the crowd rather than standing out on its own. That is not to say the MCs Planetary and Crypt the Warchild lack in skills. On the contrary, the childhood friends are near flawless in their Latino-tinged delivery. But they might be so tight in their flow that nothing really stands out between the two. Producers 7L, Shuko and Celph Titled (who also drops guest rhymes along with Nubian Sadat X and Jedi Vinnie Paz) craft beats heavy in dark and dramatic strings, although they can occasionally fall into movie soundtrack parody. Only the closer, "Angels of Death," cuts to the bone, and that is because of guest Immortal Technique providing his revolutionary fierce international-politico rhymes. The rest of the hard-life verses on this album pale in comparison. ~ Joshua Glazer

With violent imagery so rampant in the past decade of hip-hop, the fact that Jedi Mind Tricks' third album manages a cover shot that actually succeeds in shocking is either impressive or disturbing, depending on your disposition. Same goes for Vinnie Paz's tougher-than-leather flow that hollers down "faggots" and paints pictures of ultra-violence in a way that would make A Clockwork Orange seem almost friendly by comparison. This is hard music for hard times, and it makes no concessions to the blinged-out mainstream on JMT's left flank, nor the conscious emo-rap on the right. But walking the middle ground, he declares "I don't want to die anymore/I don't want to cry anymore/Don't want to lie anymore...I just want y'all to be dead" on "The Worst," and it's hard to sympathize. Since their debut, Jedi Mind Tricks have invited a legion of guest rappers to their full-lengths, and Army of the Pharaohs could well be the dénouement; under the billing "Army of the Pharaohs," nearly a dozen different rappers make a total of 50 appearances (all those on just 13 tracks). Also, the record apparently has a concept behind it (from the subtitle "The Torture Papers," at least), but neither Vinnie Paz nor Stupe nor any of the guests ever enlighten listeners about what the concept is, or what it means. (The best bet is yet more conspiracy theories, perhaps wrapped up with some Egyptology, and endless Middle Eastern war.) The only things left to glean from this record are the performances and the productions. As for the productions, it's mostly the usual horrorcore rap, already heard on all of JMT's many full-lengths (itself cribbed from old Gravediggaz or Wu-Tang records).
