With Gives It to Ya. Twice, N.Y.C. transplant and L.A. dweller Coyote Shivers unleashes a winning, overstuffed set that splits material into two discs by approach. The full-on rockers are subtitled One Sick Pup and it's a fitting title as Shivers comes off like a raw, cathartic, debased Johnny Thunders-like character. The man works his charms with augmentation from notables like Television's Billy Ficca, howling his way through electrified nuggets like "Lust Never Sleeps" and "Live to Regret It." The latter gets repeated on the acoustic disc, which Shivers dubs From My Bedroom to Yours. It's a soul-baring, intimate, and oftentimes more immediate forum for the guy's songs, be it the devotional "Sugar High," the melodic self-analysis of "I Dress in Black," or the total downer "I Hate Myself Tonite." Gives It to Ya. Twice is a 21-track onslaught sure to expand the cult of the Coyote. ~ John D. Luerssen
The NY Press raves that "Shivers is like Lou Reed without the dark pose, Elvis Costello without the thesaurus, the Rolling Stones with a sense of humor, and Richard Hell without the chip on his shoulder." In other words, there is more to Coyote Shivers than his brief appearance performing "Sugarhigh" on the rooftop with Renee Zellweger in the cult favorite "Empire Records" would lead you to believe. If you've never seen Empire Records and Coyote still looks familiar, you may have seen him on stage opening for Kiss on one of their reunion tours (when will they end?), on one of two specials for E! Entertainment or sharing the screen with Lemmy in "Down and Out with the Dolls." If you are more of the documentary type of person -- nothing wrong with that -- you may have seen him in "Badsville," a look at the LA music scene. Then again, if you just happen to one of those bi-coastal types like Coyote, you could have seen him perform on his own either in LA or NY."Gives It To Ya. Twice." is a 2 CD set -- an electric disc ("One Sick Pup") and an acoustic disc ("From My Bedroom, To Yours"). The tracks on "One Sick Pup" are listed as tracks 1 - 12 ("Plus One" through the title track). "Sugarhigh" through "It's All Over" are on "From My Bedroom, To Yours."
Personnel: Coyote Shivers (guitar, piano); Coyote Shivers (vocals); Share Ross, Casper (bass guitar); Bam, Steve Sinnicks, Chad Stewart (drums); Jack Pedler, Billy Ficca (drums).
Photographers: Pauley P.; Stephanie Chernikowski.

| | Best Of Edgar Winter CD (2002) Remastered
Gives It To Ya. Twice music CDs
$7.59 Recorded between 1970 and 1981. Includes liner notes by Edgar Winter and Lawrence Cohn.
While some might argue that one reasonably well-compiled Edgar Winter best-of is enough, Sony Legacy follows Rhino's 1986 Collection with this 2002 edition, which only shares six tracks with its predecessor. With liner notes and involvement from Winter, this might be a little closer to what he would like to be remembered by, and since all of his best work was recorded for Epic, there are no cross-licensing issues complicating matters. But that doesn't mean it's better. There are some major differences; Rhino chose the 17-minute live "Tobacco Road" from Roadwork, while this sticks with the shorter studio version from the Entrance album. The Best of Edgar Winter also nabs two other tunes from that debut, which Winter is clearly proud of according to his album notes. But neither the title track nor the jazzy seven-minute "Fire and Ice" gels with the rockin' gospel of White Trash or the pop/rock of They Only Come out at Night, making the sequencing rough going. The cheesy disco of "It's Your Life to Live" has not aged well and its inclusion here is puzzling, especially when nothing from the relatively well-received Shock Treatment album is included. "Rock and Roll Revival" seems forced and stiff, yet picking "Harlem Shuffle" from Edgar and Johnny Winter's only joint album, Together, is a smart addition. Oddly neither disc selected Edgar Winter's live version of "Rock ...

The breezy, jazzy rhythms and stripped-down new wave of Dislocation Dance overstay their welcome on Midnight Shift. Indie connoisseurs will wolf down the band's spare instrumentation and upbeat, naïve lyrics; however, Midnight Shift lacks consistency. The group sounds inspired on some tracks and cruising on automatic pilot on others. Dislocation ...
