Many tracks on UH HUH HER are so spare that they might be mistaken for demos, and this minimalism works in the album's favor. "Shame" and "Pocket Knife" both consist of little more than a steady beat and subtle instrumentation, but they allow Harvey's bold, emotive voice to come to the fore. Harvey's signature sense of menace shows up on a number of songs, including the lumbering "The Life & Death of Mr. Badmouth" and the dynamic "The Letter." However, the album's most notable track may be "The Slow Drug," which floats along on a faint keyboard line, fading in and out like a half-remembered dream. Though it may seem like a sonic retreat, UH HUH HER reaffirms Harvey's status as one of rock's most unpredictable artists.
A clear departure from STORIES FROM THE CITY, STORIES FROM THE SEA, 2004's UH HUH HER finds Polly Jean Harvey forgoing the poppier touches of the relatively refined former album in favor of a stripped-down, no-frills record. Aside from the presence of longtime drummer Rob Ellis, this is essentially a one-woman show, with Harvey playing all other instruments and producing every song.
Personnel: PJ Harvey (vocals, various instruments); Rob Ellis (drums, percussion, background vocals); Mr. Head, Evelyn Isaac (background vocals).
Spin (p.64) - Ranked #31 in Spin's "40 Best Albums of the Year" - "[W]illfully flipping from lush to throat-clenchingly raw with every record, and sounding just as convincing either way." Entertainment Weekly (p.121) - "[S]he returns to the raw, scorched-earth abrasiveness of her first records?.She bashes out primitive blues stomps and metal riffs, strums quietly, and sings like a wounded, wayward siren..." -- Grade: A Q (p.100) - 3 stars out of 5 - "When Harvey stretches herself things really become interesting....There is much minimalism here - with a Julian Cope-esque twist." Uncut (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[I]t's hard to deny the emotional weight and beauty of Polly's personal, if comparatively uncommercial, sixth album." CMJ (p.4) - "[E]motional provocateur PJ Harvey models her trademark confessionals on a runway of introspective ballads similar to her work on IS THIS DESIRE?..." Mojo (Publisher) (pp.99-100) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]here are some fabulous moments from both sides of Harvey's brain, red-clawed rock'n'roll and murky psychosexual narratives." p j harvey Uh Huh Her Songs Uh Huh Her Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Weird, beautiful and rough PJ Harvey is back and she's great! But you need at least four times to listen to "Uh Huh her" to understand her new direction. This cd is not optimistic and clean like "Stories from...". It sounds like a lo-fi collection of B-sides and demos, but the quality still remains. She revisits the roots of "Dry" and "Rid of me". "Uh hu her" will be disappointing for the people that were waiting for the second part of "Stories from...". However, all real PJ fans will be satisfied. The best songs: "The life and...", "The slow drug" and "Cat on the wall". Submitted by vfalcon (Lima, Peru) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

An Essential PJ Harvey Release
PJ Harvey comes through again. The first 10 songs on this album are excellent and are just as good as the material on "Stories From The City..." However, the last four tracks consist of a short instrumental, a stripped-down, folky ballad, seagulls, and a mediocre PJ Harvey song. Despite this, the first 10 songs are so impressive that the lack of quality of the last 4 can easily be overlooked. Submitted by oomingakus (Columbus, IN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
that's what i like in her she's always moving!
after the triumph called "stories from the city.." gets back with something different!
if you like Harvey's "To bring you my love" or "Is this desire" you are about to understand somehow this album.
if u expect something easy or lame stay away!
It's one more great album.
dark,femminine,lovely,true + angry.
Buy it!
It's P.J. for godsakes!!!! Submitted by sun-dagger (salonica, greece) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Unexpected PJ sounds like she's been listening to creepy Lisa Germano albums, but has a far more expressive voice to build the sense of dread with. People who buy it expecting the rocking PJ Harvey of her first two albums or the slick pop of her last album will be disappointed. People buying it for an atmospheric and nuanced voyage into a stripped-down but still-lush sonic landscape with lyrics that add to the atmospher will be quite satisfied (with the exception of "What the F"). The title of the Tumwater, WA, trio Unwound's seventh studio album implies a subtle, personal, internal shift. A drift from summer into autumn, an undeterrable and, at base, unsettling change of self that's akin to a calm but determined change of seasons. Leaves Turn Inside You is the culmination of Unwound's three-year process of reinvention, and on first listen by anyone familiar with the band's trademark slash and burn abrasiveness, the transition seems anything but subtle. The path that led to the the band's first double album wasn't an abrupt and contrived stylistic leap, however. The members had aged a bit, taking the three years since recording 1998's Challenge for a Civilized Society to ponder their musical identities, an introspective windfall that led them to construct their MagRecOne (Magnetic Recording Academy) studio, and to the decision to self-produce an album for the first time in their ten-year history. At the end of two long years, the band had built and rebuilt MagRecOne, and labored under its own standards of quality control until the 14 songs that would make up Leaves Turn Inside You were finished. All the while, individual band members were occupied recording bands populated by kindred spirits who identified with the studio proprietors' methods and manifesto, and also working on side projects such as bass player Vern Rumsey's Long Hind Legs. The construction of a home studio afforded Unwound the one key resource that comes in such short supply and at great expense when recording in a professional studio: time. ...

$15.99 In the same year that Bob Dylan stepped back from his electric pilgrimages by releasing an album of roots-oriented morality tales, the Byrds took a symbolic flight to Nashville. Gone was Roger McGuinn's singular 12-string guitar sound and the acid rock that had influenced everyone from the Monkees to the Velvet Underground. McGuinn now played banjo, and bassist Chris Hillman ...
